Job Title: Environmental Advisor
Reporting to: SHEQ Manager
The Environmental Advisor will be responsible for overseeing all works related to environmental management on overhead line projects, liaising with NorPower project management personnel, site teams, sub-contractors, and SHEQ personnel, ensuring the highest standards of environmental protection and management
The jobholder will work on-site full-time as part of an experienced construction team, setting to work and coordinating overhead line teams to meet project timelines. Travel to various site locations throughout the UK will be required.
Including but not limited to:
Support environmental and sustainability activities for projects and the business.
Collate environmental and sustainability data from across the business to meet internal and client requirements.
Assist the Environment and Sustainability Manager in liaising with clients, regulatory bodies, and subcontractors on environmental management and sustainability matters.
Provide support to operations and design teams on compliance and project-specific mitigation measures, including pollution control and environmental protection.
Assist with the production of internal and external reports, e.g., case studies, environmental & sustainability performance.
Undertake other related duties as directed by the Line Manager.
Create and maintain a safe working environment, taking responsibility for the Health & Safety of yourself, colleagues, and others; actively promote SAFEchecks to assist continual improvement.
Lead by example and embed a positive culture, managing employees reporting to you to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, regulations, and codes of practice.
Cooperate with the Project Engineer and Project Manager to plan and monitor works, update site staff on planned works, and report progress against targets.
Allocate and coordinate site resources including NorPower staff, sub-contractors, materials, and equipment, considering authority, training/experience, and competence.
Ensure risk assessments are carried out daily and that conditions and methods of work are safe.
Conduct setting-to-work briefings and ensure working parties have access to relevant information and instructions.
Ensure works are carried out in accordance with all relevant SHEQ drawings, schedules, processes, and methods, and maintain accurate records.
Ensure safe operation and storage of plant, tools, and equipment on site, including checks, tests, inspections, and certifications.
Ensure incident and near-miss reporting requirements are met and assist with investigations.
Supervise trainees with suitably experienced staff and assist in continual development of all staff
Educated to degree level in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Sustainability, or equivalent.
Knowledge (and ideally some experience) of environmental legislation, ecological mitigation, and sustainability practices
Understanding of the construction operating environment
Membership of an Environmental Body (e.g., IES, IEMA, CIEEM).
Positive and pro-active approach to safety of self and colleagues.
Ability to plan ahead, prioritise workloads, and respond quickly to changing situations.
Effective leadership skills to achieve employee engagement and customer satisfaction
Ability to work outdoors in a site environment in all weather conditions.
Minimum five years’ experience in the overhead line construction industry, including three years holding a DNO authorisation/competency certificate
Experience in all areas of OHL construction and maintenance, including inspection, testing, certification, and reporting procedures.
Appropriate Health & Safety certificate (e.g., Site Supervisor Safety Training).
Strong knowledge of environmental management and sustainability issues, including Water Environment, Ecology, Archaeology, and Private Water Supplies.
Full UK driving licence and flexibility to travel.
Ability and willingness to be flexible with working from home, office, and site
Self-motivated with excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Ability to establish effective networks internally and externally.
Competence in IT packages, including Microsoft Office, and willingness to learn new software.
Ability to share knowledge and skills with colleagues.
Flexibility to travel across the UK.
Training, experience, and certification for relevant machinery, plant, and equipment, including lift planning.
Ability to ensure compliance with safety rules and documentation
Ability to work in a time-pressured environment and adapt to changing situations.
Strong teamworking skills and the ability to organize a work site professionally.
Undertake field surveys for European protected species (badgers, otters, bats, water voles, etc.).
Conduct Phase 1 and UK habitat surveys
Carry out nesting bird checks and understand Schedule 1 birds.
Deliver training and toolbox talks on ecological best practices.
Assist with obtaining and managing protected species licenses when required.
Monitor compliance of works and advise on peat management
Advise on implementation of environmental mitigation
Advise on water management and quality, construction techniques, and habitat enhancement/restoration (BNG).
Use Geographical Information System (GIS) software proficiently.
Review and comment on client works information
Liaise with stakeholders and legislative bodies (e.g., NatureScot).
Retain records of project environmental compliance
Assist with discharge of consent conditions
Review RAMS and work permits
Support compliance with NorPower/Omexom ISO14001 management system
Full UK Driving Licence
CSCS Card
Degree in Ecology / Environmental Management
Membership of AECoW, CIEEM, IEMA, or similar
Personal ecological licence holder (beneficial)
