Job Description

Hazen and Sawyer is seeking an entry level Site / Civil Engineer for our Raleigh, NC office with occasional local and regional travel required. This role involves both hands-on work in layout planning, piping systems, grading, paving, roadways, and stormwater infrastructure, as well as managing various stages of project development, from conceptual design to construction support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop site layout plans including yard piping, roadways, grading, stormwater systems, and paving for water/wastewater projects.
  • Conceptual and preliminary design efforts, including field visits, data collection, alternatives analysis, and technical reporting.
  • Perform hydraulic calculations and contribute to hydraulic modeling tasks.
  • Permitting processes and evaluating design alternatives.
  • Coordinate work with sub-consultants and ensure design integration.
  • Prepare technical memoranda, reports, and electronic design deliverables.
  • Provide construction-phase support by reviewing contractor submittals and responding to RFIs.
  • Site reconnaissance and field investigations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidate should have relevant co-op or 1 – 2 years of post-graduation experience in the design and regulatory permitting of site plans, drainage studies, stormwater collection systems, Best Management and LID practices, and erosion control for construction.
  • Specific experience in site/civil design and permitting for water and wastewater treatment plants and conveyance projects is advantageous. Candidate should have obtained FE status.
  • Technical proficiency in the use of AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D 2025 for the design of site layout, grading, drainage, and yard piping is required.
  • Additional further experience or familiarity with hydrologic/hydraulic modeling software, and Autodesk Vehicle Tracking desired.
  • Familiarity with site survey practices, shop drawing review, and field construction QA/QC is a bonus.
  • Candidate should be able to effectively and proactively coordinate with regulatory officials as well as in-house design disciplines (Process, Mechanical, Structural, Electrical, Architectural, etc.) and other offices/regions to ensure site design and permitting incorporates all necessary aspects of project.
