The Enterprise Messaging & Collaboration Team within Information Technology (IT) manages applications used Enterprise wide, primarily focused on collaboration and modernization tools. We provide design, implementation and support services to all departments within Wake County

The Enterprise Messaging & Collaboration Team is here to keep everything running smoothly, offer help when needed and ensure our collaboration platforms and services meet the needs of Wake County employees.

Plus, we're always working on new projects and systems to better support our Wake County employees.

As an Enterprise Messaging & Collaboration Systems Engineer, you'll work closely with multiple divisions within Information Technology, as well as business units across the county, to provide administration, design, implementation, integration and support for the Microsoft 365 platform and related technologies. This position offers the opportunity to improve enterprise collaboration services, implement new capabilities, troubleshoot complex issues and help modernize the County's digital workplace.

You'll manage multiple initiatives simultaneously while supporting the Microsoft 365 platform, including Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Entra ID and related Microsoft 365 services.

In this role you'll assist with platform administration, system integrations, identity and access management, troubleshooting, governance, security, service optimization, and the implementation of new Microsoft 365 capabilities that enhance collaboration and productivity across the organization.

NOTE: This is a 100% remote position and may be subject to 24-hour on call requirements with the ability to be onsite at any Wake County location.

NOTE: For positions with a remote work option, all Wake County
Government remote workers must reside in one of the following states or
districts: North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas
or Virginia.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or a related field
  • Two years of experience in network or database design and administration
  • Six years of experience in network or database design and administration or systems analysis may be substituted for the combined education and experience requirements
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)


We are looking for individuals with 3+ years of experience in a combination of the following:
  • Microsoft 365 Administration (e.g. Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Microsoft 365 Apps and related Microsoft 365 services)
  • Identity and Access Management (e.g. Microsoft Entra ID, hybrid identity, authentication, Conditional Access and directory services)
  • Enterprise Systems Administration (e.g. on-premises and/or cloud infrastructure)
  • Microsoft 365 Platform Integrations and Automation (e.g. PowerShell, Microsoft Graph, Power Automate and third-party integrations)
  • Customer Service and Technical Support (e.g. Help Desk, Tier 2/3 support, enterprise application support and incident troubleshooting)
  • IT Project Implementation and Administration (e.g. platform migrations, service deployments, upgrades and operational improvements)
