The Opportunity

This role shapes the growth and transformation of HSBC’s enterprise AI engineering capability. You’ll set the engineering strategy, build and scale AI-powered platforms and deliver production-grade AI and Generative AI solutions across the organisation. Working across strategy, architecture, engineering and delivery you’ll partner with business and technology stakeholders to turn high-value opportunities into measurable outcomes. Success means reusable capabilities that teams can adopt easily, reliable services that meet availability and performance targets and a clear roadmap that earns trust at executive level. You’ll also build engineering depth through coaching, hiring and career development so the capability scales sustainably.

What you'll be doing

• Define and deliver the enterprise AI engineering strategy aligned to business objectives and technology direction
• Shape the architecture then build and scale AI/ML and Generative AI platforms and associated applications
• Embed reusable capabilities, frameworks, tooling and engineering standards across engineering teams
• Partner with enterprise and solution architects to align with target architecture, cloud strategy, security and non-functional requirements
• Deliver production-grade GenAI solutions including LLMs, RAG and agentic workflows with patterns for reliability, scalability and maintainability
• Set success metrics for value, productivity, risk reduction and adoption then translate ambiguous problems into measurable outcomes
• Own delivery across a portfolio of judicious initiatives with clear management of scope, milestones, quality and risk
• Strengthen engineering practices including Agile, CI/CD, automated testing, code quality, release management, production support and observability

What we're looking for

• Bring substantial software engineering and technology experience gained in a regulated or complex enterprise environment
• Demonstrate established experience managing engineering teams and senior technologists including through Engineering Leads or Managers
• Show a proven track record delivering enterprise-grade platforms and cloud-native solutions at scale
• Apply strong Python capability and modern engineering practices across APIs, microservices, databases, containers and CI/CD
• Deliver AI/ML and Generative AI solutions end-to-end from experimentation and prototyping through to production
• Apply practical GenAI expertise across LLMs, RAG, embeddings and vector databases, prompt engineering, agentic workflows, evaluation, guardrails, LLMOps, observability and Responsible AI
• Partner effectively with senior stakeholders by translating business problems into measurable technology outcomes and communicating clearly at executive level
• Build and grow teams through coaching and mentoring, hiring and workforce planning, performance management and succession and career development
