The Enterprise NERC Reliability Assurance (ENRA) team at AEP provides coordination and decision-making authority for NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) compliance obligations. The team leads cross business unit teams, executes process improvements, performs root cause and incident analysis, provides independent oversight and technical support, project and risk management, metrics development, and engagement and outreach. Within ENRA, the NERC Policy & Engagement team supports regulatory analysis, policy development, and stakeholder coordination related to the development of NERC reliability standards; monitors emerging issues; prepares summaries; coordinates stakeholder recommendations on corporate positions; and helps represent AEP in regulatory and industry forums, strengthening the organization’s ability to anticipate changes, influence policy outcomes, and maintain strong relationships across the reliability ecosystem.

What You’ll Do:

Standards process management — Manage the internal standards‑development workflow, coordinating reviews, aligning stakeholders, and ensuring timely submission of comments and ballot participation.

Stakeholder coordination — Facilitate collaboration across business units to gather insights, resolve differences, and present unified organizational positions.

Policy development — Lead the development of AEP’s policy positions by synthesizing SME input, drafting recommendations, and shaping clear, defensible corporate perspectives.

Regulatory analysis — Review emerging NERC standards, regulatory filings, and policy proposals to assess potential impacts on AEP operations and strategy.

Issue monitoring — Track and interpret emerging regulatory, industry, and standards‑development trends to inform leadership and internal partners.

Briefing preparation — Prepare summaries, talking points, and briefing materials to support leadership and SMEs in policy and standards‑related discussions.

External engagement — Represent AEP in NERC, Regional Entity, and industry forums to advance AEP’s policy perspectives and influence standards outcomes.

Committee nomination support — Coordinate solicitation, evaluation, and submission of AEP nominations for NERC and industry committees, working groups, and drafting teams.

Metrics development — Develop and track metrics that measure Policy & Engagement team performance, including ballot effectiveness, participation quality, and engagement outcomes.

Regulator interface — Support policy‑focused interactions with federal and regional regulators by preparing materials and coordinating discussions that inform AEP’s regulatory engagement strategy.

Process improvement — Contribute to ENRA initiatives that enhance policy coordination, documentation, and organizational readiness across the standards and regulatory engagement lifecycle.

What We're Looking For:

Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering, mathematics, communications, computer science, business, or related field of study; or Associate's degree in one of the aforementioned fields of study and two (2) years of relevant work experience.

Experience: In addition to any experience required above, five (5) years of experience in electric utility or similarly regulated industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced education — Master’s degree in public policy, engineering, law, business, or a related field.
  • Technical or policy background — Experience in energy systems, regulatory affairs, or public policy.
  • Relevant certifications — NERC‑focused compliance or reliability certifications or PMP or CAPM certifications.
  • Industry and standards experience — Experience with utilities, Regional Entities, NERC, and familiarity with ballots, drafting teams, or comment cycles.
  • Analytical and problem‑solving ability — Demonstrated skill in resolving complex technical or policy issues.
  • Communication and coordination strength — Proven ability to build relationships, manage cross‑functional work, and produce clear policy materials.
  • Project coordination — Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast‑moving standards environment.
  • Travel — Occasional travel will be required (approximately 25%)
