Job Description


To provide clinical Electroencephalography (EEG), Electromyography (EMG) services to out-patients, in-patients and ED patients. Electroneurophysiology (ENP) technologists possess the knowledge, skills, and judgment to independently perform complex diagnostic tests such as electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) on adults using specialized and sensitive electronic diagnostic equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS
• B.R.E.T.C. and C.B.R.E.T. certificate required
• Current registration in good standing with A.E.T.C and C.A.E.T. required
• Completion of a College Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in a relevant clinical field is preferred
• Minimum Highschool Diploma is required
• 2 years experience performing EEG and EMG
• Experience in outpatient, inpatient and critical care settings
• Current BCLS required
• Possess an extensive working knowledge of neuro anatomy and functional anatomy as it relates to EMG and EEG technology
• Basic nerve and muscle histology as it pertains to excitation and propagation of action potentials in peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junction transmission and electrochemical/mechanical coupling in skeletal muscle, including type of nerves and their connections responsible for phenomena observed in EMG technology
• Proficient in nerve conduction studies single fibre, phrenic nerve and upper and lower limb
• Comprehensive knowledge of EMG concepts such as gain, sweeps speed, filters, averaging, calibration, stimulating electrode and stimulating parameters, electric safety, ohms law, leakage current and EMG filter and equipment settings
• Well developed patient assessment planning, intervention and evaluation
• Comprehensive knowledge of EEG electrode placement and EEG concepts such as montages, annotation, sensitivity, filter settings, video monitoring as well as activation procedures
• Ability to prepare a written technical impression for the interpreting physician using standard medical terminology when documenting relevant information on the recording Electronic Medical Record documentation
• Good attendance and work record are essential

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Adheres to responsibilities regarding ethics, confidentiality, and compliance with the Association of Electromyographers of Canada (AETC) and the Canadian Association of EEG Technologists (CAET)
• Maintains appropriate interpersonal skills with patients, allied health staff, physician staff and other hospital and clinic staff
• Provide EMG services by performing nerve conduction studies such as: median, ulnar, radial, musculocutaneous, sural, superficial peroneal, medial and lateral plantar, saphenous, facial
• Perform myasthenia/myasthenic syndrome studies, late response studies, blink reflexes
• Explains the NCS (Nerve conduction study) procedure to the patient to obtain consent, and cooperation necessary to complete the examination
• Performs both common and uncommon nerves studies to aid the EMG physician in the best studies to expose abnormalities
• Confirms patient’s referral and medical record for orders and special needs, particular attention to patients with pacemakers, defibrillators and neurotransmitters
• Being familiar, competent, and knowledgeable in all the clinical, specialized and research related EMGs
• Provide EEG services in adherence to the standards of CAET
• EEG Electrode placement knowledge and ability to interpret and evaluate clinical data
• Perform Sleep Deprived EEG studies, EEG with Video as well as routine EEG
• Performs and documents activation procedures such as hyperventilation, photic stimulation, sleep or drowsiness
• Familiar, competent, and knowledgeable in all clinical, specialized and research related EEGs
• Design exam based on patient history in conjunction with departmental protocols and proceed with completion of exam base on patient response and demonstrated abnormality
• Receiving and preparing patients for diagnosis, administering test to patients in required time period, observing patients to ensure accurate results
• Participating in ongoing Quality Assurance within the department
• Providing educational, technical supervision and training to fellows, residents and students
• Accurate timely completion of all cases in the Electronic Medical Record
• EVP an asset, St. Joseph’s does not offer this service
• Ensure safe operating/maintaining of Electromyographic equipment, making minor repairs when necessary and documenting and report equipment failures
• Participate in research activities as required
• Participate in educational activities and lecture doctors, nurses, interns and students on EMG Department
• Participate in training of new staff members
• Competed CME in compliance with AETC and CAET
• Works under minimal supervision
• Other duties as assigned
