Newcomer Programs & Services has served newcomers and refugees in Toronto for over four decades. Its mandate is to help newcomers and refugees settle, adjust, and integrate into society. Funded by the three levels of government, WoodGreen Newcomer Programs & Services operates English language training programs, settlement services, employment support programs, mentorship, networking activities, and social and recreational activities. Newcomer Programs & Services is committed to providing friendly and professional services to all newcomers to help them connect with Canadian society and their new way of life.

This position is responsible to the Senior Manager of Newcomer Language Services for preparing lessons and teaching English language classes in accordance with the Canadian Language Benchmarks and specific program curriculum and requirements. Our language classes are mostly in-person, some may be virtual as well.

This position develops appropriate teaching methodologies, materials and activities in accordance with the Language Instructor for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program including Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) as well as the Canadian Language Benchmarks and specific program curriculum. This preparation time is included in the classroom instruction time. The position maintains the targeted number of learners (i.e.: attendance), assists in recruitment of learners, and refers learners to other services/programs within WoodGreen.

What You Will DoDelivers instruction to English language learners in accordance with Canadian Language Benchmarks, and performs all duties associated with Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA), specific program curriculum, and other guidelines set out by WoodGreen and its funders.Develops appropriate lesson plans, teaching methodologies, materials and activities based on the experiences, social contexts and life goals of learners, and as approved by the Manager of Newcomer Language Services. The preparation time is included in the instruction time.Respectfully collaborates and cooperates with other staff within WoodGreen to ensure clients’ success and integration in programming.In consultation with the Manager, arranges for guest speakers, fieldtrips and other computerized/on-line learning activities to facilitate learning of learners. This planning activity is included in the instruction time.Starts classes on time, and adheres to the scheduled breaks and dismissal time.Using PBLA assessment practices and principles, evaluates progress of learners on an on-going basis, and promotes them to the next level as required.Monitors learners’ attendance, follows up with learners who are absent or are at risk of dropping out. Informs Manager if attendance drops.Supports WoodGreen’s learner recruitment efforts through providing input, encouraging referrals from existing learners, and supporting recruitment activities.Monitors the settlement needs of learners and links them to WoodGreen’s services and programs.Submits curriculum outlines, lesson plans, attendance records, and statistical and program reports on time. The plan and the preparation of records and reports are included in the instruction time.Maintains program resources (e.g., computers, instructional materials and books) and ensures they are in good condition.Participates in regular supervisory sessions with the Manager of Newcomer Language Services.Ensures the anti-racism objectives and community development principles of the organization are achieved.Performs other related duties as required from time to time.

What You Bring to the TeamBachelor’s Degree(s) in Teaching, Adult Education or Social ScienceTESL Ontario Certificate; current member in good standing with TESL Ontario (OCELT certificate)Fully trained in Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) an assetCLB Bootcamp (or similar training) Minimum 2 years' experience in teaching English as a Second Language and implementing PBLAExperience using technology and delivering online classes and hybrid models effectivelyExperience in teaching multi-levels in a multicultural environmentWhat Will Set You ApartStrong ability to work in a team and able to teach with limited supervisionKnowledge of settlement issues and familiarity with educational resources for newcomers to CanadaExcellent knowledge of Canadian Language Benchmarks (obtained CLB bootcamp or similar documentation) including training in and experience with implementing Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA).Strong capability in developing specific curriculum, modules, lesson plans, and assessments or learning activities for target groups.Strong ability to prepare lessons in accordance with needs, prior experiences, and life goals of learners.Demonstrated experience in teaching English language classes to newcomers from diverse backgrounds with a positive approach to multi-level teaching.Understanding of anti-racism issues and community development principles.Excellent computer skills: MS office, Internet, and knowledge of on-line teaching technologies and resources.Ability to collaborate and work effectively in teams.Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.Proven administrative skills: submitting curriculum outlines, lesson plans, attendance records, and monthly reportsWoodGreen is an equal opportunity employer.
