Under the direction of the Supervisor of Engineering Surveys, the Engineering Technologist Technician 1 prepares topographical surveys, layout surveys, as-builts and various other surveys of municipal infrastructure using both survey equipment, software, and methodology, and Computer Assistant Design and Drafting (CADD) in field and office environments.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Acts as crew lead for engineering surveys and in performing calculations, integration of data, measurements, operation of equipment, etc. Formats digital data and develops base plan & profile.
  • Coordinates field crew activities and work in a safe and efficient manner and plans, organizes and prioritizes work with minimal supervision.
  • Directs, instructs and trains staff in all aspects of engineering survey work, methods, procedures and operations.
  • Conducts engineering surveys for a variety of programs and projects pertaining to City facilities and infrastructure in accordance with City of Toronto "Engineering Surveys Standards".
  • Prepares drafts of documents, contracts, specifications and gathers information and relays to supervisor, inspector, designer and/or the project engineer, as required.
  • Searches, evaluates and analyzes designs, reports, specifications and any documentation related to projects. Indexes, files and references engineering survey records.
  • Assists in ensuring projects are carried out in accordance with City Engineering Standards, specifications and procedures.
  • Conducts field inspections and evaluates condition of facilities, including hazard identification.
  • Ensures the use of safety equipment and adherence to safety procedures and regulations by conforming to the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, other related Health and Safety legislation and City of Toronto Health and Safety Policies.
  • Assists Project Engineers and carries out technical work in support of the planning, design, construction and inspection of municipal infrastructure.
  • Supports and liaises with Project Engineers, Inspectors and Contractors. Checks and audits consultant and contractor work for completeness, accuracy and compliance with City standards.
  • Attends on-site meetings with Project Engineers, Inspectors, Contractors, utility companies, etc. regarding construction and repairs on capital projects.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of mechanical, digital, analogue, wireless, computerized and other equipment and systems.
  • Inspects and makes arrangements to ensure appropriate maintenance of survey vehicles and contents.
  • Performs survey work and prepares and checks data using Computer Assisted Design and Drafting (CADD) input information.
  • Provides progress reports on work and completes time sheets and attendance reports.
  • Performs and checks manual and computerized calculations (e.g. control points, traverses, center lines, grades and elevations).
  • Investigates and responds to inquiries from the public, surveyors, consultants and contractors related to construction activity and engineering survey issues.
  • Evaluates and suggests remedial action when survey related construction problems occur.
  • Prepares, reads and interprets technical drawings.
  • Finalizes field notes and survey reports for preparation of plans and designs.
  • Searches, evaluates and analyzes existing engineering records, notes and plans, and gathers information and relays to supervisor, inspector, designer and/or the project engineer.
  • Determines survey procedures to be used. Makes calculations to run both open and closed traverse lines. Effectively performs complex survey work for topographic, pre-engineering data collection, construction layouts, audits, stake-outs, as-built surveys, hydrographic soundings and control network maintenance. Records and makes detailed field notes of same.

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

    1. Graduate in Surveying, Geomatics or Civil Engineering Technology OR the approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
    2. Experience as a project lead and directing an engineering survey field crew on Municipal infrastructure construction projects.
    3. Considerable experience utilizing automated field and office technology, such as manual calculations of field data, field work data management, field survey software, coordinate geometry software, data downloading software, word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
    4. Considerable experience conducting engineering surveys using total stations and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) equipment.
    5. Must possess a Driver's License, Class "G" or better, valid in the Province of Ontario and be able to maintain same. Ability to maintain a valid City of Toronto Operator's Permit.

You must also have:

  • Thorough knowledge of the theory of engineering surveying, Engineering Survey Standards and skilled in its applications. Ability to process information from survey equipment, including an understanding of CADD principles.
  • Knowledge of the principles of engineering technologies.
  • Ability to operate survey equipment (e.g. handheld computers, robotic total stations, global navigation satellite systems, electronic measuring devices, levels and related equipment).
  • Ability to provide direction, organize and schedule activities of a survey crew.
  • Ability to perform manual and computerized mathematical calculations used in engineering surveying.
  • Ability to produce legible and accurate engineering field survey notes and produce plot plans.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, plans and records.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, at all organizational levels including the public, consultants, engineering staff and other representatives.
  • Understanding of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, and regulations that apply to this work.
  • Physical ability to drive stakes, lift maintenance hole covers, carry equipment and supplies and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to prioritize different projects in a busy environment.
  • Problem solving, project co-ordination skills and the ability to exercise independent judgement in dealing with technical matters.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and organize and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to direct and work well in a team.
  • Available to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends for projects.
