This posting is for an Engineering Technician I in the Division Survey Office. This is an entry level position supporting higher level engineers and technicians located in the Division Survey Office, which covers Alamance, Caswell, Guilford, Orange and Rockingham Counties. This position performs technical duties supporting engineers and other professionals in areas such as construction inspection, materials testing, project surveying, and program/regulatory compliance. Work functions may include: inspection for compliance with contract documents, standards, and specifications; testing of materials; review of plans; analysis of engineering-related data; and construction survey/layout. Daily duties will include keeping diaries on project operations, completing various material reports, documenting pay records, performing construction calculation, and computer/iPad entry. Applicant must be able to perform construction related mathematical calculations. Applicant will be required to acquire various certifications, including QMS Asphalt, Concrete Testing, Borrow Pit Sampling and OSHA Certifications. Employee must be able to maintain these and all required certifications to perform the duties of this position. Applicant must be able to perform concrete tests requiring lifting buckets of concrete and perform density tests on soils and aggregates requiring digging, weighing, and measuring volumes. Ability to establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the general public. Employee must be able to lift 50lbs, work in high traffic areas, work at heights over water or traffic, work in extreme temperatures, traverse uneven terrain, and work at night, weekends and holidays if necessary. Selected candidates will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
If there are no qualified candidates remaining in the applicant pool who meet the minimum Education and Experience or Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position, the agency may consider for this position, a trainee who does not meet the minimum requirements. Salary for a trainee may be set at a lower level than the classification salary range and recruitment range that is listed in the posting with the salary being adjusted up accordingly when the trainee has obtained the necessary additional education and experience to fully meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the classification specification.
