Engineering Support – AutoCAD
Our Electric Advanced Design team and Substation Design team are seeking two detail-oriented and skilled AutoCAD technicians with AutoCAD Civil 3D experience. You will have an opportunity to contribute to multiple projects in supporting our electric transmission, distribution, and substations engineers. This position is being posted at multiple levels; based on your education, experience, and skills will determine which level you are starting at.
Engineering Support Specialist: 2 years of experience
• Min starting pay = $36.54/hr
• Mid-point pay = $42.01/hr
Engineering Support Specialist Senior: 5 years of experience
• Min starting pay = $40.29/hr
• Mid-point pay = $46.33/hr
Engineering Support Coordinator: 7 years of experience
• Min starting pay = $46.62/hr
• Mid-point pay = $53.60/hr

Key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
AutoCAD Support
- Engineering support utilizing AutoCAD, AutoCAD Utility Designer, and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D software for utility design projects.
- Using drafting techniques and principles to draft, measure, draw, and revise plans, as-built and installation drawings according to field mark-ups while adhering to drafting standards.
- Assisting in developing and maintaining construction and design standards.
- Developing materials specifications and requirements, and ensuring materials meet specifications.
- Added plus if you can provide the following, but these are not required:
- Familiarity and ability to produce plan and profile drawings for underground utility, including complex directional drill profiles.
- Knowledge of point clouds and the ability to import and interpret data using AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Creation of base files (on FIMS Coordinate System) for construction staking purposes
- Preparing physical and mechanical layouts, schematics, and wiring diagrams for substation projects.
Distribution Field Support
- Provide support to Distribution Engineers in conducting research on existing electric infrastructure electronically.
- Provide support to Distribution Engineers in the SUE (Subsurface Utility Engineering) process. This involves coordinating with several groups, both internally and externally to obtain locates, conduct potholing, document findings, capture survey data, and provide information back to engineering.
- Ensure that as-builts, and proper documentation of construction projects are provided
- Support Distribution Engineers by communicating any work change directives and necessary change orders with the Engineers and the Project Manager.
- Determining access needs, surveys, and negotiating with property owners; obtaining right-of-way easements, and researching titles to determine ownership.
General
- Provide support to internal line crews, including material recommendations, damage assessments, and inventory coordination.
- Collaborate with Project Managers, Electrical Engineers, Designers, Field Engineering, Civil/Structural, and many additional internal & external departments.
- Visit project sites and work with field teams to develop solutions and corresponding designs.
- Work with internal and external sources to get designs fabricated, reserve or procure materials, and monitor delivery to the sites.
- Review contracts and specifications to ensure compliance with engineering and material standards.
- Monitor outside consultants, contractors, and vendors to ensure compliance with specifications, bid proposals, and obligations.
- Support QC to monitor the contractor’s safety, performance, and quality of work and address any deficiencies during the project as they arise.
What will it take to be successful in this position?
Associate’s Degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical), CAD/Design, Engineering Technology or a closely related field from an accredited university is REQUIRED. An equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be accepted in lieu of the education requirement. At least 4 years of experience in a relevant engineering-oriented field. Additionally, we are most interested in your experience in the following areas:
- Demonstrated experience in an engineering support capacity
- Formal education or certification with AutoCAD is REQUIRED
- Experience with AutoCAD 3D is Preferred.
- Ability to create a plan and profile drawings
- Ability to extract map data from GIS and create terrain
- Ability to download, create, analyze, and adjust survey data, as well as transfer field-captured data to the office
- Knowledge of substation electric schematics and wiring diagrams
- Possession of a valid, unrestricted driver's license is required - this position requires operating Colorado Springs Utilities' vehicles to visit job sites
- Ability to collaborate, build and establish relationships, and strong attention to detail
- Communication skills will be extremely important. You will be communicating with field crews, engineers, vendors, consultants, and on occasion customers. You must be comfortable communicating with others.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exerts up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a small amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those required for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a small amount, a job should be rated Light Work when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree or when it requires sitting most of the time, but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls and/or when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is small. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding work even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.
- Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions and intense noises.
