About the Department:

Electric Boat Department 403 Technical Writing is seeking a dedicated individual to lead the Reactor Plant Planning Yard team. This team is responsible for the management of Propulsion Plant Technical Manuals under the cognizance of Naval Reactors including Component Technical Manuals, Programmatic Manuals, and Ship Systems Manuals supporting Fleet Boats, the Moored Training Ships, and the S8G Prototype. This team also supports development of Alteration Instructions for the fleet under Naval Reactors Cognizance.

Technical Manuals are one of the few products produced by the Reactor Plant Planning Yard that are used by the sailor daily. This team of Technical Writers, Editors, and Technical Leads ensures technical quality of manual and instruction products while meeting the requirements of Naval Reactors. Technical Writing researches, writes, and publishes system level and component level technical descriptions and procedures for all submarine classes

The Reactor Plant Planning Yard Technical Writing Supervisor will support a team of Technical Writers to support the Reactor Plant Planning Yard Engineering teams to publish all manuals under Electric Boats cognizance as Technical Manual Maintenance Activity supporting Naval Reactors. The Supervisor guides and grows Writers, Editors, and Technical Leads to improve capabilities and ensure stability to delivering to Naval Reactors expectations. The Supervisor additionally leads the Reactor Plant Planning Yard Engineering teams in understanding and executing their responsibilities to maintain manuals

Key Responsibilities:

  • Applicant will work closely and coordinate with multiple engineering disciplines, technical illustrators, and other department supervision to support development of new or revised alteration instructions, descriptive chapters, operating procedures, maintenance procedures, and component technical manuals for systems and equipment found onboard nuclear-powered submarines.
  • Applicant will ensure the technical accuracy, quality, cost, and schedule performance of products.
  • Applicant will coordinate routinely with engineering management for development, review and approval support.
  • Applicant will routinely interface with the wider Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program Enterprise (NAVSEA 08, NNL, BPMI, NAVSUP).
  • Applicant will foster professional development of assigned employees.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Engineering
  • 4 years Engineering Experience in submarine design or operations

Preferred:

  • Qualified in Submarines or experience in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program
  • Experience with MDA/UAW bargaining agreements
  • Experience with logistic technical documentation
  • Experience with NAVSEA/Government collaboration
  • Prior leadership experience
  • Experience with Artemis

Skills

Technical Knowledge and understanding of submarine systems and components and their operations and interdependencies

Strong organizational skills

Experience in cost control policies and practices

Robust verbal and writing communication skills

Possess positive interpersonal skills

Ability to manage a diverse group of technical writers/editors in the performance of multiple projects
