Salary: £55k to £65k per annum, dependent on location and experience.

This is a remote position and is open to applications based in the Europe, Middle East and Africa ( EMEA ) region, with CET and GMT time coverage.

Job Overview

As an Engineering Manager you’ll balance technical oversight and people management with strategic team leadership, to ensure best practices around software development.

You will be responsible for the wellbeing and ongoing professional development of the engineers within your team, supporting individuals, and enhancing project development through the excellence of those in your team. You will be the primary point of contact for them to come to with any difficulties that they are facing. You should have thorough knowledge of the challenges of working in engineering, delivering projects to clients and working in a global remote team.

You should be confident in collaborating with delivery and commercial teams to ensure the smooth running of the squad. You’ll be able to anticipate and identify problems as they arise, addressing them yourself, or escalating them to the relevant discipline lead when necessary. Your role will include consistently gathering actionable feedback and delivering this to your reports in a constructive manner, utilising the information as a tool for growth and continuous improvement, encouraging open dialogue and accountability amongst the squad.

Engineering managers are expected to take an active role in delivering client projects, however your primary focus will be ensuring different engineers work together effectively at scale. You should have a broad knowledge of the technologies used within Human Made, so that you are able to support and direct members of your team. You will develop thorough knowledge of Human Made’s engineering framework and philosophy to confidently support your team to acquire the skills they need to reach the next level.

Responsibilities

  • Complete Performance Reviews and 1:1s for your reports.
  • Collect feedback and translate it into constructive input for your reports.
  • Manage, coach and mentor your reports, supporting their development and career progression.
  • Represent your engineering team in meta-level discussions such as team structure, wellbeing, and professional development.
  • Lead a cross-functional squad, setting clear goals and creating a culture of accountability.
  • Facilitate ceremonies such as retrospectives and squad check-ins.
  • Collaborate with other engineering managers and discipline leads to ensure consistency in practices and alignment of the squads.
  • Take an active role in identifying gaps in engineering knowledge and steering training as required.
  • Keep up to date with current engineering best practices in WordPress, while keeping an eye on emerging trends and shifts in new technologies that can be used in developers' day to day.
