The Opportunity

After more than 15 years of outstanding leadership, our Engineering Manager is retiring, and we're looking for someone special to take the helm.

This is a rare chance to step into a business-critical leadership role at CML, taking charge of an established team of 6 engineers. You'll shape how we design, deliver, and innovate, while continuing to build a culture our people genuinely enjoy working in.

Your Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Development

• Lead, coach, and develop an established team of engineers, creating a supportive environment where junior members can grow and thrive
• Act as a mentor and technical role model, championing continuous professional development across the team (contribute as Supervising Civil Engineer as part of CML’s Apprentice and Graduate Development Programmes)
• Foster a collaborative culture that reflects CML's values

Design Coordination

• Managing your team of engineers, you will monitor and provide guidance to the team coordinating the design of temporary and permanent works across a diverse project portfolio
• Provide technical management and quality assurance across all engineering outputs

Engineering management, Client & Framework Engagement

• Assess competencies and nominate Contractors Responsible Engineers (CRE) and Contractors Responsible Managers (CEM) on Rail frameworks and contracts
• Act in capacity of CEM on rail contracts where required, drawing on broad project experience to build client confidence and trust
• Represent CML's engineering capability in client and stakeholder relationships
• Appoint temporary works roles and act in capacity of Temporary Works Designated Individual (DI) for temporary works where required

Engineering Compliance & Process Improvement

• Take ownership of engineering compliance across the business
• Lead the ongoing development of engineering processes and systems
• Identify inefficiencies and implement practical, effective improvements, with genuine autonomy to shape how the team works

Person Specification

We're looking for someone who brings both technical depth and genuine leadership warmth:

QUALIFICATIONS

· Chartered Civil Engineer (ICE, or equivalent), with senior-level experience

SKILLS

· A proactive, improvement-minded approach, comfortable identifying inefficiencies and confident implementing change

· Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with clients, designers, and colleagues

EXPERIENCE

· Broad experience across a range of project types, including experience relevant to Rail framework contracts

· Proven experience coordinating temporary and permanent works design

· Experienced and already acting in the capacity of CEM

· A track record of managing, coaching, and developing engineering teams. You enjoy bringing people on, not just reviewing engineering deliverables

· Strong working knowledge of engineering compliance and quality processes
