Downer Rail is leading provider of rollingstock asset management services in Australia; we have a deep history within the rail industry and currently have world class leading expertise in house that deliver whole-of-life asset management support to our customers. Our capability allows us to offer turnkey solutions for complex projects and spans every project phase, from design and manufacture to through-life-support, condition monitoring and data analytics, to fleet maintenance, operations, and comprehensive overhaul of assets.

We are seeking an experienced Fleet Engineering Manager (Mechanical or Electrical) to support a major freight maintenance contract in Melbourne, leading a multidisciplinary team of engineers and staff. You will be responsible for improving Spotswood fleet reliability and leading the engineering team to resolve technical fleet issues.

Drawing on strong engineering leadership, rolling stock expertise and engineering change experience, you will work with internal and external stakeholders to improve locomotive reliability.

The Locomotive Fleet Engineering Manager will maintain approved engineering standards and tools in line with technical plans and regulatory requirements.

Experience & qualifications:

  • 10 years’ engineering experience in a related field

  • Degree qualified in a relevant engineering field

  • Be Registered or working towards becoming Registered on the National Engineering Register and membership of a relevant professional institution, such as Engineers Australia.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and optimise asset upgrade projects

  • Strong understanding of rolling stock electrical and mechanical systems

  • Sound knowledge of relevant Australian and international rolling stock standards

  • Knowledge of engineering processes, including failure reporting, investigations and engineering change

  • Knowledge of asset management, maintenance optimisation and Reliability Centred Maintenance principles

  • Knowledge of rolling stock maintenance, overhauls and mid-life upgrades

Role:

  • Act as the authorised Downer Rail & Transit Systems representative for locomotive fleet engineering and assurance matters, serving as the key contact for internal and external customers.

  • Lead cross-functional reliability engineering teams to maintain a safe, compliant and reliable locomotive fleet, while optimising performance, profitability and contractual outcomes.

  • Provide engineering leadership across technical solutions, project activities and overhaul processes, including the development and maintenance of engineering procedures and test instructions.
