Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead one of our Engineering teams. You will play a pivotal role in the success of Lendscape, supporting your team to deliver consistently and reliably high-quality software products. You and your team will have operational ownership of the system you deliver. As a member of the Engineering Leadership team, you will have the opportunity to shape not just your team but the wider engineering function.

The Opportunity

Lendscape is at an exciting point in its engineering journey — actively investing in its people, practices, and platform to support continued product growth in the lending software market. Engineering is building out its leadership function, modernising its technical foundations, and raising the bar on how it delivers software. There is real momentum, and real work to be done.

For the right candidate, this role offers genuine strategic reach. Alongside leading your team, you will be an active contributor to Engineering’s growth — shaping hiring strategy, influencing technical direction, and helping define the culture and ways of working that will characterise the function for years to come. Teams at Lendscape are intentionally kept small to enable close, high-trust, high-impact leadership. This is not a role for someone who measures seniority by headcount; it is a role for someone who wants to build something excellent and leave a lasting mark on the organisation.

Requirements

Strategy

Understand business goals, help your team to understand them, and work with the Product team to ensure that work aligns to those goals.

Stakeholders

Collaborate with stakeholders to align with business interests and ensure that the voice of your team is heard. Maintain a tight, transparent collaboration between engineering and other business functions.

Metrics

Work with your team to track team-level metrics. Utilise frameworks such as DORA and SPACE to collect and analyse data, educate your team on what the numbers mean, and drive continual, measurable improvements in delivery effectiveness and team health.

People

Hire, lead, mentor, and motivate a team of approximately 4 to 6 engineers, fostering collaboration, accountability, and high performance. Set clear expectations of knowledge, skills, and behaviours across all levels from Graduate to Senior. Provide coaching, feedback, and structured development plans to help team members grow and excel. Build strong, trusted relationships that enable open and honest communication. Implement effective feedback mechanisms and perform regular, calibrated performance reviews. Be a servant leader.

Beyond your immediate team, contribute actively to the Engineering organisation. Participate in Engineering Leadership team initiatives, contribute to Engineering-wide hiring and talent strategy, and take ownership of cross-cutting programmes — such as communities of practice, graduate development, or engineering-wide ways-of-working improvements — that help shape the culture and operating model of Engineering as it scales.

Ways of Working

Champion agile methodologies — Scrum, Kanban, and related practices — within your team, and support the scaling of these practices across Engineering, Product, and Design. Facilitate a culture of reflection and learning and of the sharing of best practices. Continually identify bottlenecks and champion improvement across the wider engineering function.

Technology

Work with your team to design solutions that meet functional and non-functional requirements, follow Lendscape’s architectural standards, and take those solutions through solution design review. Contribute to Engineering technical standards and the Technical Roadmap. Be accountable for critical architectural decisions, making these openly and collaboratively with Staff/Principal Engineers and the Chief Architect.

Provide technical leadership in Lendscape’s core stack, with a strong focus on Java/Spring for server-side development and proficiency across associated technologies:

  • Web technologies: HTML, JavaScript, React
  • RESTful APIs and GraphQL
  • PostgreSQL or equivalent relational databases
  • Testing: JUnit, Mockito, TestNG, and broader testing methodologies
  • On-premises and cloud operating environments (AWS)
  • CI/CD pipelines and containerisation

Actively manage technical debt, making conscious trade-offs between delivery speed and long-term quality. Justify accrual against business value and risk, and budget resources for timely payoff. Ensure the team’s technical alignment to Lendscape’s tech stack and system patterns, facilitating knowledge-sharing and growth across engineering.

Embrace and champion the use of AI tooling to accelerate software development across the full SDLC — from requirements and design through to coding, testing, review, and deployment. Actively evaluate and adopt AI-assisted tools that improve team productivity and quality, foster a culture of experimentation with emerging capabilities, and share learnings across Engineering to ensure Lendscape remains at the forefront of modern engineering practice.

Quality

Embrace agreed quality standards within your team, creating a quality-first mindset. Uphold clear expectations of performance, reliability, and maintainability across everything the team ships.

Delivery

Collaborate with Product and Design to define OKRs, estimate, and plan work. Work with your team to deliver at a sustainable and predictable pace, ensuring that impediments are dealt with in a timely manner and escalated where support is needed. Act as an expert mentor in software delivery, guiding the team on effective practices and leading delivery directly for key initiatives where appropriate. Manage delivery timelines and risks, balancing team capability growth with efficient resource allocation.

Operations

Collaborate with Platform Engineering to actively monitor your components in production, ensure that NFRs are met, and deal with any issues as a priority. Be part of the on-call rota to provide out-of-hours support.

Finance

Evaluate the cost implications of technical decisions within your team, balancing technical excellence, delivery timelines, and financial considerations to ensure solutions are both cost-effective and aligned with business goals.

Compliance

Ensure your team adheres to Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) policies and principles, embedding these requirements into day-to-day processes. Build team understanding of their importance and collaborate closely with the GRC team on policy clarity and improvements when needed. Deliver solutions that meet regulatory standards and organisational policies. Maintain a high awareness of security matters in relation to your software and dependencies, aiming to ‘shift left’ on security, and contribute to the security guild and champions network across engineering.

Experience & Knowledge

  • 3+ years in an engineering people management position
  • 5+ years delivering complex technical projects
  • 8+ years in hands-on engineering roles with a strong focus on Java
  • Demonstrated ability to be language-agnostic when designing solutions, picking the right tool for the job
  • Experience using mentoring and coaching to grow engineers through multiple expertise levels
  • Demonstrable ability to lead a team to a vision/strategy in a high-performance environment, driving continual improvement
  • Experience with containerisation and effective build and deploy processes in CI/CD environments
  • Experienced applying delivery methodologies appropriate to any given context, whether greenfield projects or long-lived product maintenance

Skills & Competencies

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to collaboratively overcome challenges across technical, delivery, and people leadership
  • System design skills to ensure the full range of functional and non-functional requirements are met in accordance with wider strategies such as security, scalability, technical debt reduction, and long-term business goals
  • Skilled in data collection and analysis to drive data-driven decision-making for performance improvement
  • Effective in estimating and planning delivery of complex projects, assessing risks and team resource requirements
  • Exceptional collaborator, able to resolve complicated bottlenecks to maintain delivery throughput
  • Outstanding communication across varied audiences, from Graduate Engineers to Executive Committee (ExCo)
  • Skilled feedback giver and taker; adept at creating a safe environment for continual feedback and growth within a high-performing team
  • Demonstrate empathetic leadership, not least in the hardest conversations around change or performance management

Benefits

  • Private medical care and cash plan
  • Flexible working hours
  • Continuous training
  • Cycle scheme and sponsored gym
  • Learning and development
  • Wellness and mindfulness perks
  • Colleague volunteering
  • Life assurance
  • Work alongside a team developing and delivering innovative technology that creates huge value for a variety of local and international clients
