Job Description

Avis Budget Group is seeking a manager – Data Engineering to lead the design, development, and reliability of data platforms that power critical decision systems across Revenue Management, Fleet Optimization, and Operational Analytics.

This role combines data engineering leadership with strong data operations ownership, ensuring that business-critical data pipelines, decision systems, and reporting platforms are scalable, reliable, and responsive to real-time business needs.

You will lead globally distributed teams to deliver high-quality data solutions while ensuring seamless Run-the-Business (RTB) operations for mission-critical workloads.

Key Responsibilities

1. Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of data engineers and data operations/support engineers across multiple geographies
  • Build a culture of ownership, operational excellence, and continuous improvement
  • Drive hiring, performance management, and career development

2. Data Platform & Engineering

  • Design and scale data pipelines and platforms supporting:
    • Revenue Management (pricing, forecasting)
    • Fleet planning and optimization
    • Customer and operational analytics
  • Own architecture of data warehousing/lakehouse solutions for structured and semi-structured data
  • Ensure high standards for data quality, lineage, governance, and security

3. Delivery & Product Alignment

  • Partner with Product Managers and business stakeholders to define and deliver data solutions aligned to business priorities
  • Own roadmap planning, sprint execution, and delivery governance using Agile methodologies
  • Ensure prioritization aligns with business impact, SLAs, and operational commitments

4. Data Operations & Reliability

  • Own end-to-end reliability of production data pipelines and decision systems
  • Lead RTB (Run-the-Business) activities, including:
    • Batch pipeline monitoring and performance optimization
    • Incident (Sev1/Sev2) management and resolution
    • Root cause analysis and permanent fixes
  • Oversee production support teams, ensuring:
    • Timely handling of critical business requests (e.g., same-day executive reporting)
    • Effective prioritization of bug fixes, enhancements, and patches
  • Establish and improve SLAs, observability, alerting, and operational playbooks

5. Stakeholder Engagement & Business Impact

  • Collaborate closely with Revenue Management, Fleet, and Operations teams to ensure data solutions drive measurable business outcomes
  • Translate complex data insights into actionable recommendations for business stakeholders
  • Support leadership with critical ad hoc analysis and decision support when needed

6. Continuous Improvement & Innovation

  • Evaluate and adopt new tools and technologies to improve platform performance, scalability, and cost efficiency
  • Drive automation across data pipelines and operational processes
  • Continuously improve engineering and operational practices

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field
  • 13+ years of experience in data engineering, data platforms, or analytics engineering
  • 3+ years of experience leading and managing engineering teams
  • Experience working in global, distributed delivery models

Technical Skills

  • Strong expertise in:
    • SQL and Python
    • Data warehousing and ETL/ELT frameworks (e.g., Informatica, Matillion)
    • Workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, IWS)
    • Cloud platforms (AWS, OCI)
    • Distributed data processing (e.g., Spark)
  • Experience with modern data platforms (e.g., Oracle ADW, Redshift) preferred
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Data modeling (warehouse + lakehouse)
    • Data governance and data quality frameworks
    • Performance tuning and large-scale data processing

Data Operations & Production Support Experience

  • Proven experience managing data operations / production support teams
  • Strong experience with:
    • Incident management and escalation handling
    • Batch and pipeline performance optimization
    • Release management, patching, and change control processes
  • Ability to operate in a high-availability, business-critical environment with tight SLAs
