Flexible Working Options
Hybrid WorkingThe purpose of the Engineering Lead is to work with the Lab Product Owner to provide effectively leadership and management of the teams in their Labs. Specifically, this requires setting the vision, mobilisation of the teams required to deliver it and ensuring effective delivery execution. With the Lab PO they are also responsible for all operational management activities including workforce plans, risk and issue mitigation and cost management. There is a particular focus on the ways of working and overall engineering experience, where the Engineering Lead is responsible for creating the right environment for effective delivery which will include the identification of blockers and action plans to remove them.
What you’ll be doing…
As a Lab Engineering Lead, you will:
Technical Leadership & Delivery
- Lead the end‑to‑end technical delivery across teams within the ID & Auth lab, ensuring high‑quality, secure, and resilient engineering outcomes.
- Own the delivery roadmap in partnership with Product Owners — ensuring alignment to platform strategy, regulatory priorities, audit commitments, and customer journeys.
- Ensure all applications and services delivered by your lab meet engineering standards, security requirements, operational readiness, risk controls, cost efficiency, and Group Technology strategy.
- Provide deep technical direction on cloud‑native authentication architectures, APIs, event‑driven systems, and modern engineering patterns.
- Champion adoption of modern engineering practices — automated testing, CI/CD, observability, secure-by-design, and engineering-for-resilience.
Cloud & Platform Engineering
- Guide teams building services on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) including GKE, Cloud Run, IAM, Pub/Sub, and related identity services.
- Drive engineering capability in building scalable customer authentication services (e.g., passkeys, MFA, OIDC, token services, credential management, authorisation patterns).
People Leadership
- Manage, mentor, coach, and grow engineering talent across your teams.
- Build a diverse, high‑performing engineering community, focused on psychological safety, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Partner with Product, Architecture, Site Reliability Engineering, Security, and Lab Leadership to ensure clear direction and strong cross‑team relationships.
Quality, Risk & Operations
- Embed strong operational discipline including incident management, capacity planning, and engineering excellence rituals.
- Ensure your lab consistently meets risk, audit, and compliance obligations, especially within the regulated authentication domain.
- Troubleshoot complex engineering and production challenges, providing hands‑on guidance when needed.
What we’re looking for…
Experience & Leadership
- 14+ years of software engineering experience, with 2+ years leading engineering teams or squads.
- Proven ability to manage multiple squads, set direction, and lead technical delivery in complex, regulated environments.
- Experience working in or alongside platform teams delivering core, high‑availability services.
Technical Skills
- Strong background in distributed systems, API design (especially REST/OIDC), microservices, and event‑driven architectures.
- Proficiency with Java.
- Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GKE, IAM, Compute, networking, resilience engineering).
- Strong grounding in engineering fundamentals — data structures, algorithms, software architecture, and system design.
Engineering Excellence
- Hands‑on experience building CICD pipelines, automated test suites, and secure coding practices.
- Deep understanding of agile delivery methodologies at scale.
Identity & Authentication (Preferred)
- Experience building authentication, authorisation, or security‑critical services (e.g., MFA, OAuth2, OIDC, SSO, passkeys, cryptographic services).
- Familiarity with standards such as FIDO2/WebAuthn, JWT, PKCE, token management, and identity lifecycle.
