Engineering Interns Operations Engineering Group – WSE/TSE

Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking two motivated Engineering Interns to join our Operations Engineering Group! One role will be a Field Engineering Intern – Water/Wastewater Systems (WSE) and the other will be a Treatment Engineering Intern – Water & Wastewater Treatment Systems (TSE). Interns will work directly with senior engineers and operations staff to support hands‑on projects that help maintain and improve critical community infrastructure. The internships can be year-round or summer only; with the preference being year-round.

As a member of the Operations Engineering Group, you will be supporting and working with engineers, plant operations, plant maintenance and other stakeholders resulting in a positive impact to your academic and professional learning and to the overall growth of our community. In doing so, you will have the opportunity to work with a very dedicated team of professionals who are passionate about their service to our community.

Field Engineering Intern – Water/Wastewater Systems (WSE)
Support our system engineering team with work involving lift stations, pump stations, pipelines, tanks, and related water/wastewater infrastructure.

Key Areas of Focus:

  • Assist with field inspections, condition assessments, and data collection for pipelines, tanks, and pumping facilities
  • Support engineering analysis and evaluations for maintenance and capital improvement projects
  • Work with operations staff on troubleshooting, system performance reviews, and field investigations
  • Help prepare technical documentation, including reports, drawings, and field notes
  • Participate in project coordination, contractor interactions, and construction support activities
  • Gain exposure to asset management practices, GIS, and real‑world engineering problem solving


Treatment Engineering Intern – Water & Wastewater Treatment Systems (TSE)
Work with treatment engineers and plant operations staff to support process optimization, facility improvements and creation of smart drawings within municipal water and wastewater treatment plants.

Key Areas of Focus:

  • Assist with process monitoring, sampling support, and performance evaluations
  • Assist with collecting and researching equipment specifications to populate information into drawings, specifications and databases
  • Assist in the creation of drawings of existing facilities
  • Prepare technical summaries, charts, and documentation for engineering and operations teams
  • Work alongside operators to understand treatment processes, plant operations, and system reliability needs

Who You Are: A student pursuing Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, Chemical, or related engineering degrees with an interest in water/wastewater systems, treatment processes, or municipal infrastructure. Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with both engineering and field/operations staff and the willingness to learn, take initiative, and work in both office and field environments.

*This is an on-site, non-remote/non-telecommuting position
*Hourly rate is dependent on year completed of academic degree, e.g., second year complete, third year complete, etc.
*Candidates MUST be enrolled in a degree seeking program (Associates/Bachelors/Masters) with a 2.5 GPA and be able to provide documentation if requested. Enrollment in a certification program does not qualify.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exerts up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a small amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those required for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a small amount, a job should be rated Light Work when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree or when it requires sitting most of the time, but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls and/or when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is small. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding work even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.
- Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions and intense noises.
