Manufacturing Engineer Summer Intern

The Manufacturing Engineer Summer Intern supports daily manufacturing operations and continuous improvement initiatives within a production environment. This internship provides hands-on experience in manufacturing processes, process improvement, data analysis, quality systems, and cross-functional teamwork. The intern will work closely with manufacturing engineers, production supervisors, quality, maintenance, and operations teams to improve safety, quality, delivery, and productivity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist manufacturing engineers with process improvement projects and production support activities.

  • Analyze production data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and improvement opportunities.

  • Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives such as 5S, Kaizen, waste reduction, and standard work development.

  • Help develop and update work instructions, process documentation, and visual management tools.

  • Participate in root cause analysis and problem-solving activities related to quality or production issues.

  • Conduct time studies and process observations to improve workflow and labor efficiency.

  • Support equipment layout, line balancing, and manufacturing process optimization projects.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including operations, quality, maintenance, and supply chain.

  • Assist with implementation of safety and ergonomic improvements.

  • Prepare reports and presentations summarizing project progress and results.

  • Perform other engineering and operational support tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.

  • Familiarity with CAD software, lean manufacturing principles, or statistical analysis tools is a plus.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma concepts.

  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes and production systems.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.

  • Experience with data analysis tools or ERP systems is a plus.

Work Environment

  • Manufacturing plant and office environment.

  • May require standing, walking production floors, and wearing required PPE.

  • Internship duration typically ranges from 10–12 weeks during the summer.
