As a Software Engineer (Backend), you will drive the design and development of backend systems that support the Tax Information Reporting Suite (TIRS) and Core Services. You will lead backend engineering efforts, build scalable and reliable services, and ensure high‑quality technical delivery.
In this role, you will own backend architecture, data processing workflows, and integrations across platforms. You will work closely with product, QA, DevOps, and other engineering teams to enable smooth releases, efficient deployments, and effective production support.
You will guide technical decisions, mentor team members, and promote best practices in coding, performance, security, and automation. This position offers a strong opportunity to deepen backend expertise while shaping modern, enterprise‑grade solutions in a fast‑paced environment.
What you will be doing
Participate actively in release and sprint planning, working with stakeholders to understand scope, priorities, and timelines.
Independently design and develop high‑quality backend solutions.
Develop comprehensive unit test cases.
Quickly debug issues and provide timely fixes with minimal turnaround.
Understand and enhance existing database stored procedures/SQL and create new ones when needed.
Communicate project status, progress, and challenges effectively with the team.
Ensure delivery of high‑quality, reliable software.
Follow best coding practices, standards, and quality control measures throughout the development lifecycle.
Continuously improve development processes, explore new innovations, and contribute to product quality enhancements.
What you bring:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
5 – 6 years of hands‑on experience in core Python and Perl development.
At least 3 years of experience working with relational databases such as Sybase, Oracle, or MS SQL.
Strong knowledge of PL/SQL, with the ability to debug and optimize complex stored procedures and SQL queries.
Working knowledge of Unix/Linux environments.
Strong understanding of object‑oriented programming concepts.
Ability to apply appropriate design patterns during solution design and implementation.
Solid experience with version control tools such as Subversion or Git.
Knowledge of cloud platforms (preferably Azure) is a plus.
Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and analytical skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
A good team player with strong collaboration skills.
Self‑motivated and eager to learn new technologies.
