Job Description

You will be supporting R&D projects focused on vessel performance modeling and simulation for electrified and hybrid maritime assets. This role applies simulation tools, systems thinking, and engineering judgment within a classification society environment, supporting design assessment, technology evaluation, rule development, and class-related services. A key focus is the assessment and modeling of marine propulsion power architectures, including propulsion, generation, energy storage, power distribution, and control integration. The role also includes applying model-based systems engineering (MBSE) to support system architecture, interface management, and requirements traceability.

What You Will Do:

  • Assess vessel performance, marine propulsion power architectures, and onboard energy systems in support of ABS classification and advisory activities.
  • Develop and apply simulation models to evaluate vessel performance across operating profiles, loading conditions, and environmental scenarios.
  • Analyze propulsion power demand, energy consumption, speed-power performance, vessel efficiency, and system behavior for conventional, hybrid, and electric vessels.
  • Evaluate propulsion power architecture options, including generation, power conversion, energy storage, distribution, drives, and controls.
  • Review design submissions and technical claims against applicable ABS Rules, Guides, and relevant international standards.
  • Apply MBSE methods to support system architecture definition, interface identification, and requirement traceability for complex marine propulsion and electrical systems.
  • Contribute to ABS Rules, Guides, and internal methodologies related to vessel performance, propulsion power architecture, and emerging technologies.
  • Prepare technical reports and collaborate with shipowners, designers, shipyards, technology developers, and research partners

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong maritime industry experience and sound understanding of vessel operations, ship systems, and marine design.
  • Experience in vessel performance, propulsion, or integrated marine system simulation.
  • Good understanding of marine propulsion power architecture, including propulsion, electrical generation, power distribution, energy storage, and control systems.
  • Good understanding of the role of a classification society in design review, rule application, and technology qualification.
  • Knowledge of ship resistance, propulsion, powering, and marine energy efficiency principles.
  • Familiarity with simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Python, Modelica, ETAP, PSCAD, or similar.
  • Familiarity with MBSE principles, including system architecture, interface definition, and requirement management.
  • Knowledge of relevant classification rules, international standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and technical writing skills

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience working in or with a classification society, ship designer, shipyard, or marine consultancy.
  • Experience with propulsion power system design or assessment for hybrid-electric or fully electric vessels.
  • Familiarity with MBSE tools or frameworks for system modeling and requirements traceability.
  • Familiarity with technology qualification, decarbonization studies, or rule and guidance development.
  • Experience validating simulation models using sea trial or operational data.
