Job Description

The Engineer, Principal, Technology is responsible for normally planning, conducting and supervising engineering design reviews and analysis assignments involving larger, more critical projects or multiple projects. These projects by nature of their complexity and difficulty require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or scientific field. Project work and assignments may be broad in nature requiring ingenuity and cross functional coordination.

What You Will Do:

  • Maintains active awareness of technical, business and management developments affecting present and potential customers and communicates this information promptly to the appropriate senior level managers.
  • Serves as Account Manager to designated and potential customers and actively promotes the services and capabilities of ABS throughout the business community.
  • Provides day-to-day leadership of Engineering staff assigned. Assigns projects to Engineers/Senior Engineers and monitors the progress of all assigned projects. Ensures the delivery of high quality service and maintenance of good customer relations.
  • Develops suggested Rule changes and/or Rule development projects as assigned. Advises assigned staff in matters related to the application of Rules and Regulations.
  • Advises managers of short- and long-term manpower needs in order to insure that qualified, trained technical staff are available as needs arise and identifies associated training needs.
  • Appraises the performance and development potential of subordinates.
  • Develops or assists in the development of qualification statements, proposals and bids; makes presentation of these materials to prospective clients when necessary.
  • Ensures accurate billing to clients in a timely manner.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

The following are new hire requirements for university graduates and experienced engineers from industry:

  • Graduate from University (A or B, and C) and a minimum of 15 years of related industry experience.
    • For those with Hull backgrounds
      • B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred
      • Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software
      • Exposed to Finite Element Method (course work or supervised research)
    • For those with Machinery backgrounds
      • B.S. degree in Marine, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred
    • For those with either Hull or Machinery background
      • Preference for graduates from a marine-industry recognized college or university
      • Good command of English language

II. Experienced Engineer from Industry (A or B)

  • Hull
    • Professional or chartered engineer license
    • Minimum 15 years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society; or a minimum of three (3) years an ABS Senior Engineer II.
  • Machinery
    • Minimum 15 years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society; or a minimum of three (3) years an ABS Senior Engineer II.
    • Seagoing engineering license or professional/chartered engineer license
  • Extensive previous experience in the aforementioned tasks.
  • Skilled in developing computer solutions for one of the following: Engineering; HRIS; Financial; CAD.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Expert on multiple tools, technical platforms, techniques, etc.
  • Understanding of the methodology of program development.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of relational and hierarchical database management systems.
  • Qualified in the design and maintenance of computer systems.
  • Data analysis and modeling.
  • Proven ability to instruct others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge with the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management System.

Reporting Relationships:

The incumbent will work closely with a senior level Manager with regards to day-to-day activities, as appropriate, such as status/scheduling of work, setting priorities, sales initiatives, etc. Direct reports to the incumbent will be members of the engineering or technical staff and office support staff.
