Job Description

Role: Engineer - Power Station Integration

Locations: Hybrid working with one of the following locations as primary: Derby, Warrington and Manchester

Our mission

Our mission is to deliver clean, affordable energy for all. Our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) offers a British solution to a global energy challenge, placing us at the forefront of a once-in-a-generation opportunity and positioning the UK as a future world leader in clean energy technology.

The team

The Power Station Integration team sits at the centre of our plant design, bringing together engineering disciplines to define how the full power station operates as one integrated system, ensuring performance, coherence and optimisation across an innovative and complex product. The team is responsible for defining power station level requirements, capabilities and attributes, and ensuring these are integrated and delivered across the design.

The role

In this context, we are looking for an Engineer - Power Station Integration to support the development and delivery of the RR SMR power station design.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you'll contribute to the integration of plant capabilities, requirements and performance attributes, helping to ensure the power station meets business, customer and regulatory needs. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your systems engineering expertise while working at the heart of a first-of-a-kind power station programme.

What we'll need you to do

We'll need you to:

  • Support the delivery of product-level aspects of the power station design to meet business and customer requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of plant capabilities and performance attributes including net power output, availability and product cost.
  • Apply systems engineering methods to support the definition and development of the integrated power station design.
  • Elicit, capture and decompose requirements and support their effective flow-down to lower-tier systems.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary engineering teams to integrate design solutions across the power station.
  • Deliver capabilities and design information within the Power Station Architecture Model using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
  • Apply structured optioneering and systems engineering techniques to support the development of robust design solutions.
  • Support the identification, management and resolution of design integration issues to ensure overarching power station objectives are achieved.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of systems engineering processes, methods and integration approaches within the team.
  • Support technical reviews, requirements validation activities and design maturity assessments as required.

What you'll bring

As you can see, this is an exciting opportunity to work at the centre of a first-of-a-kind power station design. You'll bring a systems mindset, strong collaboration skills and an interest in solving complex engineering challenges, as well as:

  • An engineering qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience within a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience in product or system-level design and integration, including contributing to the resolution of complex technical challenges across multiple systems or disciplines.
  • An understanding of systems engineering tools and techniques, including requirements elicitation, requirements derivation and management.
  • Experience using MBSE toolsets and methodologies to support engineering development activities.
  • Experience working within highly regulated industries such as nuclear, power generation, aerospace, defence or similar sectors.
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to assess complex technical information and develop practical solutions.
  • The ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Experience of systems architecture development, integration or requirements management would be beneficial.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and good practice relating to systems engineering would be advantageous.

Location

We offer flexible and hybrid working arrangements, and this role can be based from any Rolls-Royce SMR location. Regular travel may be required to support collaboration with colleagues, partners and stakeholders across our UK locations.
