Job Description Summary

The Engineering Services Team operates globally, providing remote support to field services personnel to uphold top-tier performance for GE's Solar and Storage Solutions assets. This entails optimizing the value of post-COD aspects such as warranties, long-term service agreements (LTSA), and Change-Modification-Upgrades (CMUs) to uphold customer satisfaction.

Job Description

About the Position

The Controls Engineer sits within the Reliability and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) team, with a primary focus on inverter controls troubleshooting and a growing emphasis on BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) unit and plant control support as new BESS sites come online. This role drives excellence in the functionality, reliability, and efficiency of inverters and BESS systems, integrating them effectively with other systems and aligning with both industry standards and GE's operational objectives. In addition to troubleshooting inverter and BESS-related issues, the engineer actively participates in Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) — often working through issue tickets and bug fixes as first-line troubleshooting — and contributes to Change-Modification-Upgrades (CMUs) aimed at enhancing system performance and functionality.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Ensure optimal performance and reliability of inverters and BESS units in the field.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve escalated inverter and BESS controls-related issues, including tickets and bug fixes.
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations related to inverter and BESS controls issues.
  • Support triage and resolution of control system issues as first-line troubleshooting, distinct from formal RCA processes.
  • Provide input and development support for custom control behavior requests driven by customer-specific requirements.
  • Support BESS/unit control troubleshooting in addition to core inverter controls responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with the Center of Excellence (COE) and NPI (New Product Introduction) teams on legacy system programming changes as needed.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate inverters and BESS systems effectively with other plant systems.
  • Lead or support projects focused on inverter/BESS system upgrades and enhancements.
  • Provide expert guidance on inverter and BESS technology selection and implementation.
  • Stay updated with the latest inverter and BESS technologies and industry trends.
  • Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation and guides for inverter/BESS operations.
  • Support on-site start-up and integration of inverter and BESS systems.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience with inverter controls systems.
  • Experience with developing or maintaining inverter control systems and associated software.
  • Working knowledge of BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) controls.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English (written and spoken).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Basic networking knowledge relevant to control system troubleshooting (e.g., BESS communication networks).
  • Experience distinguishing hardware vs. software root causes in inverter systems (e.g., power supplies, phase modules).
  • Exposure to custom/non-standard control software development.
  • Familiarity with legacy inverter/BESS control systems and upgrade processes.
  • Strong knowledge of modern inverter and BESS technologies and associated systems.
  • Design and development knowledge in renewables applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in inverter/BESS system integration and optimization.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder communication.
  • Previous experience with GE P80i and PERTU systems.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with renewable energy regulations and standards.

Required Characteristics

  • Self-motivated.
  • Performance-driven.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proactive and dynamic approach.
  • Solution and customer-oriented mindset.
  • Execution-driven with a focus on achieving results.
  • Comfortable operating at the intersection of hardware and software troubleshooting.
