Job Description

Zachry Engineering Corporation (ZEC) is is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer II with experience supporting power generation, heavy industrial, or process facility projects for its Omaha Design Center.

The Mechanical Engineer II will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team supporting the planning, design, procurement, and construction of mechanical systems and equipment for new and existing facilities.

  • Support the design and specification of mechanical systems and equipment for power generation and industrial facilities.
  • Assist in preparing equipment specifications, data sheets, and inquiry packages for pumps, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, tanks, piping systems, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Participate in equipment procurement activities, including technical bid evaluations and vendor document reviews.
  • Review vendor drawings and technical documentation for compliance with project requirements, codes, and industry standards.
  • Assist in the development of technical scopes of work, engineering calculations, and design documentation.
  • Coordinate with project teams, including process, civil, structural, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines.
  • Support the preparation and review of engineering deliverables such as equipment layouts, P&IDs, and mechanical design packages.
  • Conduct site visits and field walkdowns to gather information, verify existing conditions, and support project development.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, technical reports, and vendor documentation.
  • Contribute to meeting project schedules, budgets, and quality objectives under the guidance of senior engineering staff.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Approximately 2 years of mechanical engineering experience supporting:
  • Simple cycle or combined cycle power generation projects; or
  • Heavy industrial, process, petrochemical, chemical, refining, manufacturing, or similar industrial facility projects.
  • Familiarity with mechanical equipment commonly used in industrial facilities, such as pumps, heat exchangers, tanks, pressure vessels, and piping systems.
  • Understanding of fundamental mechanical engineering principles and engineering design practices.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Internship, co-op, or early-career experience supporting power generation, industrial, or process facility projects.
  • EIT certification or progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.

Physical demands

  • Employee will be required to communicate in person, via telephone, email, video chat and software systems.
  • Position will include visits to construction sites and industrial facilities requiring mobility (on ground and at heights) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves and work boots.

Work environment

  • The employee will work in a variety of environments, including offices, warehouses, and trailers or buildings located on active construction sites.
  • Construction site noise levels may range from moderate to high.
  • Construction sites may feature light- to heavy-duty equipment and vehicles, small to large industrial equipment, construction materials, communication devices, and hand or power tools.
  • The employee will be exposed to active work areas with personnel standing, walking, sitting, signaling, and communicating, as well as audible alerts such as bells, whistles, and alarms.
  • The employee must be able to safely navigate and function in dynamic construction and industrial environments while maintaining awareness of surrounding activities and hazards.
