Job Description

The Senior Engineer I is responsible for the activities related to an assigned organizational element, program, project, or task. Will normally plan, conduct, and supervise engineering design reviews and analysis assignments involving a major project or several smaller or less complex projects. These projects, by nature of their complexity and difficulty, require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular engineering or scientific field. Project work and assignments may be broad, requiring ingenuity and cross-functional coordination.

What You Will Do:

  • Conducts engineering design reviews and analyses of the piping and machinery drawings in compliance with Rules and Regulations for shipyards, manufacturers, and owner under the supervision of principal engineer or designated verifier.
  • Taking care of the technical inquiries from both internal and external clients.
  • Supports international, national, and regional regulations and initiatives related to marine environment, energy efficiency, and vessel performance.
  • Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices but may include moderately complex problems such as the resolution of conflicting design requirements, material standards or coordination of activities among other disciplines.
  • Prepares accurate and timely weekly reports and billing on all work performed.
  • Communicates the status of the current workload to all appropriate members of the team to ensure the needs of the clients will be met.
  • May propose new approaches to problems encountered and make recommendations for changes in methods, procedures or designs.
  • Implements and maintains ABS Quality System requirements relative to responsibilities after undergoing ABS Quality System training.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

  • B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred
  • An advanced-level piping and machinery engineering position requiring a minimum of ten (10) plus years of related industry experience or a minimum of seven (7) years of Class Societies experience as a plan approval engineer.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to convey information clearly and concisely.
  • Advanced knowledge of alternative fuel systems (e.g., LNG, LPG, Ethane, Methanol, Ammonia) relevant to shipbuilding and the shipping industry.
  • Shipboard or industry experience and/or knowledge of air emissions control compliance strategies and ballast water treatment system, or energy efficiency requirements and strategies, or vessel performance monitoring and analysis.
  • Ability to identify, analyze, research, solve complex and unique problems.
  • Ability to undertake short and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.
  • Ability to work well with others and strong employee relations skills.
  • Knowledge of related technical disciplines required.
  • The ability to identify, analyze, and propose solutions to problems (i.e., the competence to demonstrate complex problem-solving skills).
