Job Description

The Engineer will conduct engineering design reviews and analysis assignments related to ships / offshore unit Projectsinvolving a major project or several smaller or less complex projects. These projects, by nature of their complexity and difficulty, require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in Electrical engineering and automation. Through broader and more technically challenging work assignments, and will develop a thorough understanding of policies, methods, and procedures.

What You Will Do:

  • Performs detailed engineering review of plans, as assigned, for compliance with applicable Rules, Regulations, and contract commitments.

  • Performs work that involves conventional engineering practices but may include moderately complex problems such as resolving conflicting design requirements, material standards, or coordinating activities among other disciplines.

  • Proposes new approaches to problems encountered and makes recommendations for changes in methods, procedures, or designs.

  • Drafts technically accurate and timely reports, and responses to letters, faxes, and other forms of communication.

  • Proposes technical advice to field operations and other technical offices.

  • May work directly with clients to identify and resolve problems in the area of technical expertise.

  • Prepare accurate and timely weekly reports and billing on all work performed.

  • Communicates the status of the current workload's status to all appropriate team members to ensure the clients' needs will be met.

  • Implements and maintains ABS Quality System requirements relative to responsibilities after undergoing ABS Quality System training.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineering or other related disciplines in Electrical Engineering or Marine Systems Engineering with specialization in electrical systems.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of related industry experience or working in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of related technical disciplines and be familiar with Marine Electrical and automation system design and verification.

  • Knowledge of Electrical system design of ships and offshore units (Electrical schematics, Load analysis, short circuit calculation, Fire/gas detection, interior communication, lighting system, etc.)

  • Knowledge of Installation of electrical equipment in hazardous areas.

  • Knowledge of Propulsion control, automation principles

  • Knowledge of applicable Rules and Regulations and the impact of Rule applications and interpretations.

  • Knowledge of SOLAS, MARPOL and other IMO statutory requirements is desired.

  • Knowledge of company business policies and procedures.

  • The soft skills necessary to maintain positive client contacts and provide leadership and motivation to subordinate staff and peers.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

  • Ability to identify, analyze, and solve complex or unique engineering problems.

  • Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.

  • Able to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.

  • Professional or chartered engineer license would be an added advantage.

Reporting Relationships:

  • The incumbent will report to Managing Principal Engineer.

  • This position does not have any direct reports.

Working Conditions and Schedule:

Work is primarily sedentary. Occasionally will be required to visit manufacturing plants, remote field sites or go aboard marine vessels or structures. Wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), in accordance with ABS safety procedures, is required in such occasions.
