Engineer, Combustion Tuning

Role Overview

Apply advanced controls and combustion engineering principles to the commissioning, startup, optimization, troubleshooting, and performance tuning of Mitsubishi Power heavy-duty gas turbines. This role specializes in combustion tuning, emissions optimization, combustion dynamics mitigation, and operational performance improvement of Mitsubishi Power gas turbine fleet. Responsibilities include analyzing combustion and turbine operating data, developing and implementing tuning strategies, supporting field startup and commissioning activities, diagnosing combustion-related issues, and ensuring reliable, compliant turbine operation across a range of operating conditions.

Key Responsibilities

• These duties and responsibilities are in addition to Engineer I and Engineer II, Turbine Controls.
• Have a thorough understanding of the theory of the combustion process in industrial/large frame gas turbines.
• Have a thorough knowledge of the combustion dynamics that occur in an industrial/large frame gas turbine.
• High-level knowledge and capabilities within Digital Control Systems (Netmation, Ovation, SPPA-T3000, TXP, Speedtronic Mark VI/VIe, etc.).
• Knowledge of control and complex areas within control scheme as well as use and application as it relates to operation and troubleshooting for onsite execution.
• Able to perform combustion tuning on all classes of Mitsubishi Power gas turbines. This is to include the procedure for tuning, the process to perform countermeasures for pressure fluctuations encountered, and performance of special tuning such as load overshoot and Fuel Gas Temperature tuning.
• Knowledge and application of advanced control concepts such as Cascade Control, Feed Forward, PID tuning, bumpless transfers, etc.
• Have a thorough knowledge of the administrative requirements at the completion of combustion tuning to include customer and internal reporting.
• Provide start-up commissioning, operations and/or troubleshooting support for equipment failures and determine root cause analysis and implement solutions.
• Perform on-site combustion tuning of Mitsubishi Power gas turbines, using knowledge of combustion dynamics and Mitsubishi combustion tuning software.
• Provide calibration of field devices.
• Verify slot assignment, output, transmitter, failsafe structure, connections, display, system/loop check, operational, functional and tuning of Mitsubishi Power GT controllers.
• Program Mitsubishi logic controllers.
• Perform instrument loop calculation and operation set points.
• Prepare and submit accurate reports regarding conditions, required actions and obtained results.
• Review of other teams members controls and tuning reports for accuracy;
• Perform other such duties as may be required.
• Heavy overnight travel (at least 70%) by land and/or air.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree (BA) in Engineering from four-year college or university plus three (3) years of experience; or at least five (5) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. In lieu of experience, the candidate will have successfully completed the Controls and Tuning Training Development Program.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
• Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
• Knowledge of database, project management, spreadsheet and word processing software, electronic mail, graphics, technical diagrams, flow charts, etc.
• Travel is required in this role, as you will be assigned to be on-site during outages
