Job Description

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for delivering electrical engineering design and technical support for healthcare projects, working as part of multi-disciplinary teams across sectors such as water, transport, data centres, and industrial facilities.

The role involves undertaking design, calculations, specifications, reports, drawings, and coordination tasks in accordance with UK standards, client requirements, project budgets, and programme expectations. The engineer is expected to work with moderate supervision, contribute technically to project delivery, and support quality, safety, and continuous improvement within the REC environment.

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery

  • Deliver electrical engineering design packages for healthcare projects under the guidance of senior engineers and project leads.
  • Prepare and develop:
  • Electrical load assessments
  • Power distribution designs
  • Lighting and emergency lighting designs
  • Small power layouts
  • Earthing and bonding designs
  • Fire alarm, security, and ELV system layouts/concepts
  • Equipment schedules and technical specifications
  • Design calculations and engineering reports
  • Produce design documentation in line with project stage requirements, including concept, developed, technical, and construction design deliverables.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines including mechanical, public health, architecture, structural, and BIM teams.
  • Support design reviews, clash resolution, and multidisciplinary coordination meetings.
  • Ensure designs meet project brief, quality standards, programme, and cost targets.

UK-Specific Technical Delivery

  • Deliver work in accordance with relevant UK regulations, codes, and standards applicable to the project.
  • Support compliance with:
  • UK building regulations relevant to electrical services
  • BS 7671 requirements for electrical installations
  • CIBSE guidance and industry best practice
  • Emergency lighting and fire alarm design principles as applicable
  • Energy efficiency and sustainability requirements for UK developments
  • CDM design risk awareness and design safety considerations
  • Contribute to designs that are practical, buildable, safe, and maintainable for UK construction and operational contexts.
  • Consider UK authority, DNO/IDNO, utility, and statutory approval interfaces where relevant.

Design Management and Quality

  • Follow established QA/QC procedures and engineering check/review processes.
  • Perform self-checking of calculations, drawings, and reports before submission.
  • Support technical reviews and incorporate review comments in a timely manner.
  • Maintain proper document control and revision management.
  • Raise technical queries and risks proactively to senior engineers and project managers.

Digital Engineering / BIM

  • Work effectively within BIM and digital delivery environments for UK projects.
  • Review and support development of coordinated models and drawings using approved software platforms.
  • Extract and verify design information from BIM models where required.
  • Support data-driven and digitally enabled design workflows.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Communicate clearly with UK teams, project managers, discipline leads, and other stakeholders.
  • Participate in internal design meetings and client-facing discussions when required.
  • Support knowledge sharing across REC and Healthcare team.
  • Build effective working relationships across geography-based and multi-cultural teams.

Continuous Improvement

  • Contribute to standardisation, lessons learned, and reusable design approaches for HC project delivery.
  • Support development of templates, calculation sheets, specifications, and best-practice guidance.
  • Keep technical knowledge updated with UK engineering standards and market expectations.

Typical Technical Scope

Depending on the project, the role may include:

  • LV power distribution systems
  • Lighting and lighting controls
  • Emergency lighting systems
  • Small power systems
  • UPS and standby power interfaces
  • Earthing, bonding, and lightning protection coordination
  • Fire alarm system coordination
  • Security and ICT/ELV coordination
  • Containment and cable routing concepts
  • Plant room and riser electrical layouts
  • Sustainable and energy-conscious design solutions

Expected Level of Contribution

At this level, the Electrical Engineer is expected to:

  • Independently deliver defined portions of electrical design work.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment to routine and moderately complex tasks.
  • Work with limited supervision on assigned deliverables.
  • Coordinate effectively with internal teams and highlight issues early.
  • Support and guide junior engineers/designers for specific tasks where needed.
  • Demonstrate accountability for quality, timeliness, and technical accuracy of own work.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Master’s degree is advantageous but not essential.
  • Progress toward professional membership or chartership is desirable.

Experience

  • Typically 4–7 years of relevant electrical building services / infrastructure design experience, with exposure to UK projects preferred.
  • Experience working in a design consultancy, engineering services environment, or global delivery centre supporting UK teams.
  • Familiarity with multidisciplinary project delivery and design coordination.
  • Experience in preparing technical documentation, reports, specifications, and calculations.

Technical Competencies

The candidate should demonstrate working knowledge of:

  • Electrical design principles for building services / project infrastructure
  • Power distribution and load calculations
  • Lighting design principles
  • Cable sizing and protection concepts
  • Earthing and bonding principles
  • Basic understanding of fire alarm, ELV, and life safety systems coordination
  • UK project stages and design deliverables
  • Design safety and constructability considerations
  • Engineering documentation and specification writing

Software Skills

Proficiency in some or most of the following is desirable:

  • Revit / BIM tools
  • AutoCAD
  • Dialux / Relux or equivalent lighting software
  • Electrical calculation tools such as Amtech / Trimble / similar
  • Microsoft Office applications
  • Common document management and collaboration platforms
