Job Description

BHE GT&S has an exciting opportunity as an Engineer – Electrical Compression I/II/Sr., at our Pleasant Valley Station in Centreville, VA or our Leesburg Station in Leesburg, VA.

This position provides engineering and technical assistance to field operations, engineering and technical services groups for the evaluation, design, installation and repair of compression systems

  • Provide advanced programming efforts, engineering support and troubleshooting relative to natural gas driven reciprocal, turbine and electrical compressor systems as well as station level components. Interface with Company engineering and construction, field operations, other technical services departments and third-party vendors/contractors to ensure safe and efficient operation of said equipment.
  • Maintain standard base programs to incorporate lessons learned, enhance system functionality, add new features and capabilities to future program development and standardize program configuration.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentor less experienced engineers and specialists in control software development, troubleshooting and testing. Ensure company project development remains on track through all phases of the project lifecycle.
  • Provide input to engineering and construction, field operations, technical services and planning groups to assure the design, installation and operation of control systems meet Company, governmental and industry codes and standards.
  • Interface with the Operations Technology team to ensure control system hardware and software solutions adhere to Company cyber security Policies and Guidelines.
  • Review programming changes for programmable logic controllers and human machine interfaces relative to the change control process and assist in the development of scopes of work and implementation plans relative to the change requests.
  • Work on process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiencies of control system operation and stay current with industry trends through participation in organizational memberships and new technology review.
  • Perform comprehensive testing on substation apparatus (e.g., power factor testing, turns ratio testing, megger tests) and all analytical tests required to ensure reliable operation. Support maintenance and calibration of associated station equipment such as generators, motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), circuit breakers, AC inverters, DC chargers, batteries, HVAC systems, and instrumentation.
  • Recommend and monitor preventive maintenance software and systems
  • Perform site inspections, walk-downs, and maintain accurate drawings and configuration control documentation.
  • Adhere to all applicable safety rules and protocols, including NFPA 70 (National Electric Code), NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety in the Workplace), and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
  • Review and update, if required, BHE GT&S operating procedures and engineering standards relative to control system components, standard practices and change management.
  • Perform site visits to develop project scope documents to be used for project budgeting and engineering purposes.
  • Work with the BHE GT&S training department to develop training, assessment and verification questions and plans.
  • Present classroom training to field technicians, engineering and controls and electrical specialists for control system related topics.
  • Perform skill training, assessment and verification for field operations technicians as well as controls and electrical specialists.
  • Perform any additional responsibilities as requested or assigned

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, automation or engineering technology from an accredited institution.

Job level determined by years of experience;

  • Engineer I – Zero to one year of experience.
  • Engineer II – One to three years of experience.
  • Senior Engineer – Minimum five years of experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of industrial control systems, automation, networking and electrical equipment, including experience with Rockwell platforms (Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View SE, ControlLogix), support of large electrical motors, medium-voltage switchgear, protective relays, and the ability to troubleshoot a variety of control platforms and communication networks. Experience with SEL, GE, and Beckwith relay hardware is preferred.
  • Understanding of compressor operations, reciprocating and centrifugal compressor technology, rotating equipment, industrial safety practices, and applicable environmental regulations, with a willingness to develop expertise supporting EGTS compression assets.
  • Demonstrated analytical, troubleshooting, and technical writing skills, with the ability to investigate complex issues, develop effective solutions, prepare technical reports and project documentation, and respond to operational challenges in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, work effectively with geographically dispersed teams, and build productive relationships with field personnel and technical resources.
  • Ability to perform physical duties such as climbing, working at heights, confined space entry, and lifting.
