The EHS Industrial Engineer is an engineering role responsible for supporting measurable improvements in equipment, process, and facility safety through engineering design, modification, and structured continuous improvement initiatives within the foundry.

This position partners closely with the Healthy & Safety Manager, Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, and UAW‑represented employees to identify hazards, co‑lead incident investigations, design and implement sustainable engineering and systemic solutions that reduce risk and improve workplace safety.The role is intentionally focused on prevention through engineering controls, safe design, and disciplined execution of improvement projects.

What awaits you:

·Identify and mitigate safety hazards through engineering controls, equipment modifications/additions, and facility improvements.

·Lead and support improvements related to:

§Machine guarding and safeguarding systems

§Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) effectiveness

§Ergonomics and material handling risks

§High‑risk tasks and maintenance activities

§Automation, interlocks, and engineered fail‑safes where appropriate

·Ensure new or modified equipment incorporates safety‑by‑design principles and complies with applicable OSHA, MIOSHA, ANSI, NFPA, and internal standards.

·Work alongside maintenance, engineering, and operations in the implementation of safety / continuous improvement items

·Co‑lead incident and near‑miss investigations with the Safety Manager using structured root cause and CI methodologies.

·Identify engineering, process, and systemic corrective actions that prevent recurrence.

·Apply continuous improvement tools (RCA, PDCA, A3s, risk assessments) to safety and operational problems.

·Track corrective actions and verify the effectiveness of implemented solutions.

·Support analysis of safety trends and high‑risk areas to prioritize improvement work.

·Support capital and expense projects by providing:

§Safety risk reviews

§Engineering scope development

§Design input and commissioning support

·Support the Environmental Engineer by providing engineering and CI assistance on projects where safety, equipment, or process changes intersect with environmental considerations (e.g., dust control, ventilation, material handling).

Qualifications

What you will need to succeed:

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, Safety, or related discipline), or Occupational Health and Safety
  • Strong working knowledge of industrial safety principles, hazard identification, and risk reduction.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute engineering or continuous improvement projects in a production setting.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with a practical, hands‑on approach.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, and machine safety standards.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across salaried and UAW‑represented teams.

Preferred

  • Foundry, metals, or other high‑hazard manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with machine guarding, LOTO, ergonomics, dust control, or material handling improvements.
  • Experience as program manager supporting capital equipment installations.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, or structured CI methodology experience.
