Job Description

Engineer - Developer Platform and AI-enabled SDLC
Internal role title – Engineer

We’re the airline that dares to be different, bold, down-to-earth and built around giving our guests real choice. Safety is our backbone, service is our heartbeat, and our people are our superpower.

We’re vibrant, authentic and unapologetically human. Here, you can bring your whole self, your Virgin Flair and your ambition to a team that champions individuality, innovation and a whole lot of heart. If you're excited by meaningful work, real opportunities to grow, and a culture where you can genuinely make a difference, you'll feel right at home with us.

Our ambition is to build the airline people love, and technology is central to making that happen. We're building a new Platform Engineering capability that will make software delivery simpler, faster and more secure across the enterprise. If you're passionate about automation, developer experience and building engineering platforms that make life easier for software teams, we'd love to hear from you.

What you'll be doing…

As an Engineer - Developer Platform and AI-enabled SDLC, you'll build and evolve the reusable capabilities that help product teams move from an idea to secure, reliable software in production. You'll improve the developer experience across the software delivery lifecycle through self-service workflows, golden paths, automation and safely integrated AI-assisted engineering.

Working with platform, cloud, cybersecurity, architecture and product engineering teams, you'll treat the developer platform as a product. You'll research developer needs, provide sensible defaults and controlled extension paths, and improve the platform using adoption, flow, quality, security, cost and developer experience data. Product teams will remain accountable for their applications and outcomes; your role is to give them the capabilities and guardrails to deliver effectively.

  • Build reusable developer platform capabilities spanning service creation, local development, build, test, security, release and operational readiness.
  • Create self-service golden paths, templates, APIs and workflows that make the preferred delivery approach fast and easy to adopt without creating a central ticket queue.
  • Engineer CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code and policy-as-code capabilities that are consistent, testable, auditable and reusable across product teams.
  • Integrate approved AI coding tools and agents into development workflows for uses such as code generation, testing, review, remediation and documentation.
  • Build controls for AI-assisted engineering, including secure access, approved data use, human oversight, evaluation, traceability, telemetry and cost management.
  • Embed automated testing, software supply chain security, observability and operational readiness into delivery workflows by default.
  • Research developer pain points, use feedback and usage data to shape a prioritised backlog, and drive adoption through practical guidance, demonstrations and examples.
  • Operate the developer platform as a reliable service, automating lifecycle management and reducing manual support and toolchain toil.
  • Measure success through adoption and outcomes such as onboarding time, lead time for changes, deployment frequency, change failure rate, control compliance, developer satisfaction and cost.

You'll be great in this role if ….

You'll bring strong software and automation engineering skills, experience with modern delivery platforms, and a product mindset. You enjoy solving developer problems and building reusable capabilities that engineering teams choose to adopt.

  • Experience as a software or platform engineer building capabilities used by other engineers.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS, cloud-native platforms and modern application delivery practices.
  • Experience engineering CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, reusable workflows and developer self-service capabilities.
  • Strong knowledge of software engineering, automated testing, version control and secure software delivery practices.
  • Practical experience with GitHub, GitHub Actions, Terraform and developer portals or equivalent technologies.
  • Practical experience applying AI coding assistants or agents within software delivery, with an understanding of their quality, security and privacy risks.
  • Experience with software supply chain security, policy as code, observability and operational readiness.
  • Strong systems-thinking and collaboration skills, with the ability to turn diverse developer needs into scalable platform capabilities.

Experience with Backstage, GitOps, developer experience research, LLM APIs, agent evaluation, AI gateway patterns, or safety-conscious and regulated environments would be highly regarded.

We're committed to looking after you, with some of the best benefits and conditions in the industry – including (but not limited to):

  • Discounted flights for you and your loved ones (including $1000 worth of travel credits per year)
  • A flexible, hybrid work style. Work from home or the office, adapt your location to suit your style and needs
