The Senior Chemist provides senior-level material science and elastomer chemistry support for Data Center and Fluid Conveyance products, with focus on rubber, thermoplastic, O-ring, seal, and related polymer materials. The role develops and maintains thermoset rubber and thermoplastic formulations, supports material selection and troubleshooting, performs laboratory testing, evaluates raw materials and suppliers, and provides technical recommendations for product development, current product support, production readiness, and customer-related material issues. The role operates with the complexity expected of a Senior Engineer by leading moderately complex material work packages, coordinating cross-functional inputs, mentoring others, and applying structured problem solving and project management discipline.
• Develop, maintain, and support rubber, thermoplastic, and other polymer formulations for Data Center applications and draulic hoses.
• Lead assigned material science work packages, including formulation trials, compound evaluation, laboratory testing, validation support, technical reporting, and recommendation of next steps.
• Support O-ring and seal material selection, application review, compatibility assessment, troubleshooting, failure analysis, and improvement actions for Data Center products.
• Perform and interpret material science laboratory testing according to standard procedures, safety requirements, and documented test methods.
• Evaluate raw materials used in production facilities, support approval decisions, and contribute to Approved Supplier List readiness, reagent efficacy, sustainability, and supplier qualification activities.
• Investigate compound, process, seal, O-ring, raw material, supplier, production, quality, or customer issues using structured problem solving and fact-based material analysis.
• Establish best practices and lessons learned for compound formulas, raw material controls, mixing parameters, testing methods, and process controls to improve product quality and reduce scrap.
• Coordinate cross-functional inputs from R&D, NPD, CPE, test lab, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Operations, Supply Chain, suppliers, and customers to close assigned material actions.
• Prepare, review, and maintain technical reports, material specifications, formulation records, test evidence, supplier inputs, risk summaries, decision history, and documentation required for engineering decisions.
• Support production scale-up, rubber mixing reviews, two-roll mill or lab-scale processing, process troubleshooting, and transfer of laboratory learning into production-ready controls.
• Apply DFSS, Lean, 8D, Fault Tree, 5 Why, or equivalent methods to improve technical decision quality and material issue closure.
• Coach and guide less experienced engineers, technicians, or stakeholders on material behavior, testing methods, formulation practices, seal material selection, and documentation expectations.
• Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, materials engineering, polymer science, chemical engineering, or a related technical field required; master’s degree or advanced technical education preferred.
• Relevant experience in elastomer formulation, polymer materials, material science testing, rubber or thermoplastic compounds, seal materials, product development, current product support, or production material support.
• Demonstrated ability to lead moderately complex technical work packages, coordinate project tasks, communicate requirements, and deliver technical recommendations with limited supervision.
• Experience with rubber mixing, two-roll mill or lab-scale processing, production-scale compounding, O-ring selection, seal troubleshooting, or polymer compatibility evaluation preferred.
• Working knowledge of structured problem solving, DFSS, Lean, 8D, Fault Tree, 5 Why, laboratory testing practices, and engineering documentation preferred.
• Ability to communicate technical findings clearly to internal and external stakeholders through reports, presentations, project reviews, supplier discussions, production support discussions, and customer support inputs.
