Job Description

Central Engineerings Asset Management Department is seeking an Engineer to support substation equipment specification, procurement, and maintenance. The role involves technical evaluations, design reviews, inspections, and field support for high- and medium-voltage equipment. Ideal candidates will have strong communication skills, a background in electrical or power systems, and experience with substation equipment procurement.

This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop equipment and accessory purchase specifications; review and evaluate vendor proposals and drawings.
  • Lead technical investigations and manage projects to completion with minimal supervision.
  • Coordinate with equipment manufacturers, industry standards bodies, and R&D organizations; qualify vendors and approve equipment for transmission and area substations.
  • Support development of operating, maintenance, and testing procedures.
  • Contribute to budgets, appropriations, scoping documents, concept reviews, design field walks, and cost reviews.
  • Support development and maintenance of equipment health indices and recommend planned replacements.
  • Conduct field evaluations of equipment and system issues; prepare failure analyses and technical reports.
  • Develop test procedures for equipment commissioning and post-repair restoration.
  • Participate in the Engineering Duty Roster, providing 24/7 technical support during assigned weeks (approximately four times per year).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and three (3) years of engineering work experience in the development and application of technical principles in substation equipment rating, application, specification, engineering, operation, and maintenance.

Relevant Work Experience

  • Computer proficiency to include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with personnel on all levels, required.
  • Knowledge in basic engineering design and principles, required.
  • Ability to write specifications and standards and coordinate engineering projects and assignments, preferred.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and industry standards associated with the equipment, preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Driver's License Required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) Preferred

Physical Demands

  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Use personal vehicle(s), and be able to transport, store, and secure company laptops and other job-related equipment in vehicle. Acknowledge that reimbursement for use of personal vehicle is available through the company mileage procedure

Additional Physical Demands

  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • The positions involve working around electrical equipment, working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, and ladder climbing.
  • Ability to work in and around substations that are under construction and/or in service.
  • Ability to work additional hours, as needed, for system emergencies or equipment outage schedules.
