About the job.

National Highways have an exciting opportunity for an Engineer to join our Active Travel Team in the Midlands. The team is responsible for identifying and developing improvements across the region that support safer and more accessible journeys for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians. This also includes identifying opportunities to support modal shift, such as improvements to bus stops and signage for park and ride sites.

Within this role, you will develop early solutions for active travel improvements, using asset data and technical information to identify needs and opportunities across the network. You will also provide technical input into planning consultations, helping to ensure active travel is appropriately considered as part of developments on or near the Strategic Road Network.

You will need to have a full driving licence, with no more than 3 points, to be considered for this position and during employment as you will be required to drive as part of your role.

• Identify and develop active travel improvements across the Midlands, supporting safer and more accessible journeys for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians, as well as opportunities for modal shift.
• Develop early engineering solutions for improvements to the strategic road network, including bus stops, park and ride signage and other active travel infrastructure.
• Assess asset data, technical information and Personal Injury Collision data to identify needs, develop options and support evidence-based recommendations.
• Provide technical input into planning consultations, helping to ensure active travel requirements are appropriately considered within developments on or near the network.
• Produce technical reports, drawings, briefs and specifications, working with internal teams, contractors and stakeholders to ensure solutions meet relevant standards, safety requirements and provide value for money.

About you.

• Degree or HND in a relevant engineering discipline with appropriate experience, or equivalent professional experience.
• Experience of developing or delivering active travel, highways or transport infrastructure improvements.
• Knowledge of DMRB standards and an understanding of value management or cost-benefit analysis within the development of engineering solutions.
• Strong technical and analytical skills, including experience of technical report writing, interpreting data and using Excel.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills and the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

External candidates will be offered a starting salary at the lower end of the pay scale, while current employees will be appointed in accordance with our established pay policy.
