Summary

DOTD is seeking a Materials and Testing Engineer to support transportation projects and programs through materials evaluation, materials testing, geotechnical exploration, quality assurance, specification development, and technical support for transportation projects. This position supports the development, delivery, maintenance, or improvement of transportation infrastructure by applying engineering principles, conducting technical analysis, coordinating projects, and conducting compliance-related reviews.

No prior engineering experience is required — training is provided, with opportunities for career progression and advancement through the Engineering job series.

Positions are located in Bossier City and report to Lab Engineer.

This vacancy is being advertised under two separate postings: Engineer Intern 1–2 and Engineer 3–5.

Examples of duties

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering.

NOTE:

Job Duties:

  • Performs or reviews materials testing, materials evaluation, or quality assurance activities for transportation projects.
  • Supports geotechnical exploration, laboratory testing, pavement testing, or construction materials review.
  • Prepares, reviews, or analyzes test results, technical reports, specifications, or materials documentation.
  • Evaluates materials, pavement, geotechnical, or construction-related data for compliance with DOTD standards.
  • Coordinates with DOTD project teams, districts, laboratories, consultants, contractors, or external partners.
  • Supports development or review of materials specifications, testing procedures, or quality assurance processes.
  • Uses laboratory, field, or technical tools to support materials evaluation and engineering recommendations.
  • Provides technical assistance related to materials, pavement, geotechnical, or quality assurance issues.

Position-Specific Details:

Career Progression: This position is part of a Career Progression Group and may be filled as Engineer 3, 4, or 5 based on qualifications and agency needs.

Compensation: These positions qualify for a Special Entrance Rate (SER).

  • Engineer 3 – $3,083.20 biweekly
  • Engineer 4 – $3,529.60 biweekly
  • Engineer 5 – $3,776.80 biweekly

Additional compensation may be considered impart with extraordinary qualifications in accordance with State Civil Service Rules and DOTD policy.

Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); Job Appointment (temporary appointment in a classified position for a limit of four years); or by detail to special duty
