Title: Engineer 1

We are seeking an Engineer I to support DOT permitting and agreement activities for Transmission Line Services. This role will assist with engineering design support, permit preparation, project tracking, contractor coordination, and communication with state and local agencies.
The ideal candidate will have an engineering or utility background with experience in AutoCAD or MicroStation, GIS, plan/profile drawings, permitting, transmission, distribution, or fiber projects
Assist with preparation, review, submission, and tracking of ALDOT, county, and city permits
Coordinate permit status and resolve permitting questions with internal teams and government agencies.
Ensure compliance with the ALDOT Utility Manual and ALDOT Permit Manual
Review oversized-load routes associated with ALDOT permitting.
Assist with reviews of Temporary Traffic Control plans in accordance with MUTCD Part 6.
Support engineering design, cost estimates, construction specifications, and construction packages.
Review contractor design solutions, estimates, and construction documentation for quality and compliance.
Support transmission, distribution, and fiber work groups with permitting and engineering activities.
Interpret plan/profile layouts, cross-sections, easements, right-of-way agreements, and utility relocation documents.
Maintain accurate project records, schedules, and permit status updates.
Support construction and maintenance teams during project implementation.
Ensure safety, quality, and applicable engineering standards are followed.
0–5 years of related engineering or utility experience
Accredited bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field preferred.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, and Access.
Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation
Experience with GIS applications
Ability to read and understand plan/profile drawings and cross-section layouts.
Strong communication, organization, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with engineering, operations, contractors, and government agencies.
Experience with DOT, county, or municipal permitting
Transmission, distribution, or fiber design/field experience.
Familiarity with MUTCD Part 6 – Temporary Traffic Control
Ability to interpret easements, right-of-way agreements, and utility relocation agreements.
Familiarity with Southern Company/utility engineering standards and processes.
Experience with SOCO JETS or similar project-management systems.
