REALM is a 36-month RIA that will define, develop, and demonstrate core technologies to establish a cross-media continuum towards the next generation of Virtual Worlds. Its vision is to deliver content that remains truly immersive, across diverse platforms and modalities, ultimately creating a profound and consistent sense of presence, regardless of the device.
To achieve this, REALM adopts a human-centric methodology structured around three pillars: (1) Novel Capture Technologies, acquiring holistic environment data extending to scene geometry, material textures, temperature, surfaces, etc.; (2) Transformative Authoring Tools, leveraging this enhanced data for realistic, scene-based, intuitive interactions; and (3) Human-Centric Delivery Platforms, providing low-friction access across devices. Grounded in open standards and leveraging advances in Generative AI, volumetric reconstruction, real-time and haptic rendering, and networked systems, these interoperable tools will build a shared framework to enable media convergence and a novel concept of Virtual Worlds.
REALM brings together Europe’s leading institutions in optics & photonics, 3D graphics, networking, HCI, haptics, and immersive arts—covering the entire value chain. The project will generate high-value impact for Europe’s creative industries, with spillover into industrial training, advanced manufacturing, and healthcare. Ultimately, REALM will contribute to a sovereign, interoperable, and human-centric European ecosystem for Virtual Worlds.

Tasks to be performed:
The successful candidate will support the research, development and implementation of the required tools and prototypes linked to UPF-WN’s participation in the European Project REALM.
In particular, the candidate will work on the following work packages and tasks: WP4 - Prototype Tools for Multimodal Interaction and Multiplatform Access to Virtual Worlds, Task 3: Multi-platform Deliveries for Immersive Experiences; WP5 - Prototypes Testing, Integration and Evaluation; and WP6 - Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation Strategy.
This translates into the following activities:
Reviewing the literature and state-of-the-art in the fields of next-generation Wi-Fi, machine learning, and XR.
Evaluating the performance of existing Wi-Fi technologies to support critical applications in general, and XR applications in particular.
Conducting research activities (i.e., solution design, implementation of evaluation tools, evaluation campaigns, and results analysis) in the area of next-generation Wi-Fi, with an emphasis on critical and XR applications.
Investigating the use of machine learning mechanisms to enhance Wi-Fi protocols and their adaptability to realistic, heterogeneous, and dense scenarios.
Researching joint application, transport, and Wi-Fi mechanisms, including cross-layer information exchange to improve QoS guarantees.
Contributing to project meetings, deliverables, scientific papers, and conference or workshop presentations.
The duration of these tasks is estimated over a period of 33 months.
Requirements:
Grau/ Bachelor degree and or master’s degree in Engineering
The expected start date is July 15, 2026, the job is in Barcelona
Selection criteria:The selection of the candidates will be made through evaluation of the curriculum and, where appropriate, with the carrying out a test and/or interview. Valuation will be as follows:
1- Academic Training (0-40 points).
Bachelor and / or Master's degree in Engineering in areas related to networks (telecommunications, electrical engineering, or IT). In case the candidate has not completed the Bachelor degree and/or master's studies, it will be assessed whether he is doing the final bachelor, master's thesis or similar, and its subject.
Having taken courses related to wireless networks, Wi-Fi, and AI applied to networks during the bachelor and master’s degrees.
2- Other professional training and experience, adequacy to the proposed profile (0-45 points):
Knowledge in wireless networks in general, and Wi-Fi in particular.
Knowledge in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
High level of programming in Matlab, Python and/or C.
Experience in using simulation/experimentation (e.g., NS3) for research in the areas of networks and communications.
Experience in performance evaluation techniques, analysis, simulation and experimentation.
Previous participation in related EU projects, and/or direct research contracts with Wi-Fi related industries.
3- Other merits (0-15 points):
High level of English (spoken, written).
Outstanding grades in network-related subjects.
Experience in writing scientific documents.
Prompt availability required.
The minimum score to pass the selection process is 80 points. The candidate with the highest score in the selection process will be offered the job.
