About the Role

Global News has an immediate full-time opportunity for an ENG Digital Technician, located in Toronto. Reporting to the Executive Producer, Crime Beat, the following is a paraphrase of the primary functions but does not outline all the duties that may be assigned to this position.

You will contribute by:

  • Shoot various elements including interviews, anchor links, broll, drone footage.
  • Advanced knowledge of ENG and Digital Camera functions and settings.
  • Advanced knowledge of documentary style lighting, framing and audio for interview subjects.
  • Digitally edit video and audio into compelling Crime Beat episodes, news, current affairs and special programming content for use across multiple markets and platforms.
  • Work both collaboratively and independently on episodes in a creative and technically accurate manner with minimum supervision.
  • Liaise with producers about scripts, video and audio requirements from various sources and formats.
  • Responsible for the visual and sound quality control of all on location shoots.
  • Superior knowledge of best colour correction practices, apply said practices to all on location shoots.
  • Consult with editor(s) to ensure camera settings, sound settings, framing is consistent with program technical standards.
  • Incorporate and generate packaging elements as required.
  • Direct and/or supervise production activities when necessary.
  • Manage equipment bookings for their shoots.
  • Help support promotions and publicity teams in identifying and capturing elements for promotion of the show.
  • Experience with news production systems: rundowns, scripts & timing requirements.
  • Recommend and locate visuals that will enhance our content.
  • Create/bank stock reels of original and feed material for future use.
  • Thorough understanding of News Journalistic principles and common practices.
  • Position requires flexible hours (morning, evenings as needed) and occasionally working weekend shifts.

Skills and experience you will bring:

  • Post-secondary education and/or experience in Journalism/Broadcasting or equivalent.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience with documentary style on location filming.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience with non-linear editing tools: Grass Valley Edius, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro.
  • Creative thinker, able to innovate the story-telling process; open to taking risks in the development of unique content for a multi-faceted digital news operation.
  • Must be able to adapt to the rapidly changing media and technology landscape.
  • Work effectively under pressure, time constraints and to deadline.
  • Must have a strong understanding of social media tools & technologies.
  • Ability to improve and positively impacts the team through cooperation and collaboration.
  • Maintain and communicate a high level of enthusiasm and commitment; applies feedback in a positive manner.
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive and emotional subject matter with care; acts sensitively while filming the survivors of trauma.
  • Demonstrate positive working relationships with team members and other departments.
  • Use good judgment in handling multiple priorities and perform all job-related tasks and assignments in a timely, efficient and accurate manner.
  • Effective problem solver, good at handling conflict.
