Job Description

This is a multi-level posting. Candidates may be considered for any of the posted levels, depending on their level of experience and depth of expertise.

The energy trader develops power-trading strategies relating to the company’s regulated business; strategies are executed by trading both physical and financial positions covering periods from the prompt month to the real-time market. The energy trader is expected to take on a leadership role while maximizing the value of company resources.

Develops and manages appropriate power-trading and offer strategies within the company's value-at-risk limitations. Trades power and derivative products in a fast-paced environment in accordance with the company's risk management policies and procedures. (25%)

Analyzes the company's physical and financial transmission power positions including availability of company owned generation resources, purchased resources and forecasted retail load requirements; develops, implements and executes appropriate trading strategies related to such positions to maximize the company's return on assets. (25%)

Understands cost structure of company-owned generation and the impact of such on company's trading strategies with specific ability to develop and execute profitable cross-commodity trading strategies. (20%)

Monitors regional energy markets including energy prices, transmission availability and unit availability and develops and implements strategic investments based upon such information. (15%)

Develops external relationships with trading counterparties. Directs market research projects. Analyzes transmission positions throughout trading region. Develops and executes transmission strategies to maximize the company's return on assets. Coordinates the use of company-owned or controlled generating plants and other resources with other staff members. Provides technical leadership to staff with special emphasis upon regulatory developments in the energy markets. (15%)

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor’s degree).

Advanced degree preferred.

One to three years of experience in the energy industry, which includes experience in one or more of the following: trading-related experience, pipeline/transmission marketing or similar commercial experience and/or utility experience.

Three or more years of experience required for the energy trader 2 level.

Superior communication, problem solving and analytical skills to forecast system projects, economic evaluation of energy production utilizing market prices for electricity, coal, gas and oil; determination of least-cost options to serve forecasting system load through production versus purchase decisions and transmission cost evaluations.

Leadership abilities, effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Ability to obtain and maintain all applicable industry certifications as required.

Position may require working non-traditional hours.

Participation on teams that results in contributions and achievement of team goals and objectives, sometimes in a lead role.

Demonstrates ability to understand and utilize computer systems and applications as tools for analysis. Strong project management skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.

Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
