Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Director of Emergency Services, is responsible for performing various duties and tasks as requested. Adheres to the scope of practice as dictated by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians; does not practice independently as they would in prehospital setting. Must function under the direct supervision of registered nurse or paramedic.

Clinical:

  • Under direct supervision of a registered nurse or paramedic assists with patient care activities and promptly reports any observed changes in patient's condition to RN/Medic or physician
  • Performs and documents vital signs, height, weight, intake and output and reports any changes out of range of normal
  • Obtains laboratory specimens as appropriate, i.e., finger stick glucose testing, urine specimens and transports to lab as necessary
  • Within scope of practice, assists with dressing changes, casting and splinting as necessary
  • Performs 12 lead EKGs per protocol and in keeping with departmental EKG metrics
  • Responsible for timely turnover of exam rooms, with attention to best practices of infection prevention for decontamination and cleaning
  • Responsible for timely restocking of exam rooms and department supplies
  • Carries out roles assigned as part of the care team during emergency department trauma cases and resuscitation efforts (CPR, runner, order entry, documentation, etc.)
  • Cross trained to perform ED clerical duties; computer work, imputing orders, filing of patient charges, answering phones as needed, transporting imaging files and other medical records as appropriate
  • Performs safe transportation of patients within the facility, utilizing safe lifting and transport adjunct equipment and good body mechanics
  • Performs post-mortem care and aids in the transportation of the body to the morgue
  • AEMT; can start IVs within the department after education and demonstrated competency with the house educator; may d/c IVs

  • Sets the stage for a positive patient interaction by always introducing self and clinical role
  • Facilitates patient and family centered care via clear communication of plan of care and educating at a level the patients, family and/or caregiver can comprehend
  • Delivers age specific, individualized patient care
  • Recognizes and utilizes appropriate resources for non-English speaking patients, healthcare literacy and hearing and sight impaired individuals
  • Take proactive steps to recognize and report suspected abuse/neglect including child, elder, sexual abuse, spousal abuse, and reports to supervisor and/or appropriate authorities

Quality:

  • Adheres to Infection Prevention standards, consistent in hand hygiene practice before and after each patient interaction. Holds team members to IP and hand hygiene standards
  • Participates in quality review within the department and participates in performance improvement projects
  • Actively participates in departmental continuous survey readiness activities, departmental collateral duties, quality reviews and performance improvement projects

  • Displays ability to work independently and within a group
  • Adheres to standards and applicable codes of conduct that govern behavior among peers and colleagues to create an environment promoting cooperation, respect and trust
  • Maintains professionalism by adhering to the Huggins Hospital dress code
  • Continues professional growth by maintaining education hours for license renewals
  • Maintains active EMT license and BCLS

  • Minimal physical effort required with occasional light lifting to a maximum of 25 pounds; stooping; and pick, pinch, type, or otherwise work primarily with fingers
  • Ability to effectively manage considerable mental stress
  • Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and convey information in a clear, concise and accurate manner
  • Familiarity with computer and other business machines

Qualifications:

Graduate from an EMT program
1 year experience as an EMT preferred, Emergency Department experience desired
Current BLS certification Required
NH EMT and NREMT licenses required
