Job Description


The EMS Technician – Level II is expected to have a strong foundational knowledge of the energy management and building automation industry. In addition to fulfilling all duties of an EMS Technician – Level I, this role takes on increased technical responsibilities and works under the supervision of an EMS Technician – Level III and/or a Project Manager. All tasks must align with the company’s Installation and Commissioning Standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Core Skills:

  • Identify all equipment types relevant to the controls industry.
  • Install and apply ARC 156 rules and devices, with the ability to explain them.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of temperature and humidity control processes.
  • Interpret and analyze equipment schematics accurately.
  • Diagnose and resolve most wiring issues, including interlocks.
  • Navigate ALC logic to locate request sources for equipment.
  • Assign IP addresses to ALC routers, such as LGRs, Opti-Flex, and G Series models.
  • Calibrate end devices including temperature, airflow, pressure, humidity, and gas sensors.
  • Understand ALC modules—their functions, configurations, and applications.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Diagnose network issues using tools like the Diag485.
  • Understand the basics of mechanical piping and ductwork.
  • Configure system runtime and equipment request logic within ALC software.
  • Properly install thermowells, pressure sensors, and temperature probes.
  • Install and understand interlock wiring for drives, high static pressure limits, and dampers.
  • Grasp building static pressure and differential pressure principles.
  • Make minor program and graphic updates in the field for smaller-scale systems.
  • Possess working knowledge of lighting panels and interlocks.
  • Begin contributing to lighting system integration and assist with lighting system checkouts.
  • Understand control protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and MSTP used by the company.
  • Navigate full lifecycle of third-party system integrations.
  • Read and follow electrical one-line diagrams.
  • Assist Test & Balance teams (air and water) using WebCTRL and provide access for balancing activities.
  • Independently execute the commissioning process.
  • Retrieve, store, and distribute system backups in a timely and organized manner.
  • Assist Level III technicians or Project Managers during inspections and system presentations to clients.
  • Understand PID control and adjust parameters to optimize performance.

Equipment Proficiency:

  • Identify various air handling units including: Single Zone (SZ), Multi-Zone (MZ), VAV, Dedicated Outdoor Air Units (DOAS), Makeup Air Units (MAU), Outside Air Units (OA), Energy Recovery Units (ERU), and Fan Coil Units (FCU).
  • Independently perform checkout and startup for units such as: SZAHU, DDAHU, MAU, FCU.
  • Perform checkout and startup with guidance for: MZAHU, VAVAHU, ERU, OA.
  • Commission a range of fan applications including Outside Air (OA), Supply Air (SA), Return Air (RA), Exhaust Fans (EF), Toilet Exhaust Fans (TEF), garage, and stairwell fans.
  • Have an early understanding of central plant systems and related components.
  • Assist with mission-critical system checkouts and commissioning tasks.

Leadership & Professional Attributes:

  • Begin taking on leadership responsibilities by guiding Level I technicians and supporting team assignments.
  • Manage multiple tasks across different projects efficiently and effectively.
