EMS & Outreach Education SpecialistWescoe Pavilion

Career Interest:

The Emergency Medical Services & Outreach Education Specialist is responsible for connecting the University of Kansas Health System, area Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers and referring facilities to meet key education, performance improvement and operational goals as related to EMS agencies and referral facilities.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Organizes outreach, education and Emergency Medical Services initiatives for the health system.
  • Works with Hospital Leadership, Marketing and Business Development to develop and grow hospital/EMS relationships to meet key marketing objectives.
  • Responsible for performance improvement and quality review activities as they relate to EMS. Organizes quarterly PI/Case Review meetings with our primary referral services for select diagnoses.
  • Monitors and reports on EMS and referral facility satisfaction through personal visitations, conferences, and other client contacts.
  • Serves as a resource to directors/managers to identify processes that hinder the EMS provider's and referral facilities’ ability to use the University of Kansas Health System as their facility of choice.
  • Develops and recommends improvement strategies based on EMS/referral facility needs and interest.
  • Promotes the University of Kansas Health specialty capabilities and quality outcomes to EMS agencies and referral facility providers.
  • Collaborates with ED manager/staff, Food Services, and Environmental Services to promote a functional and positive experience in the EMS room.
  • Organizes and implements EMS Week and other EMS events for the facility.
  • Provides support and direction for the University of Kansas Health System events requiring EMS support.
  • Coordinates with ESO data management and transfer center regarding EMS and referral facility transport and admission information. Maintains EMS agencies’ and referral facilities’ contact database.
  • Provides professional outreach education to referring facilities, pre-hospital providers and others.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education, skills competency, supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Maintains current knowledge related to applicable statutes, regulations, guidelines and standards necessary to perform job duties in accordance with the requirements of the Corporate Compliance Plan. Complies with the requirements of the Code of Conduct, Corporate Compliance Plan and Compliance Policies and Procedures, including training requirements. Participates in compliance activities under the direction of the Department Manager and Corporate Compliance Officer.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Graduate
  • EMT or Paramedic experience
  • 2 or more years of clinical experience
  • Previous hospital clinical experience


Required Licensure and Certification

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 14 days
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) OR
  • Licensed Paramedic - State Board of Emergency Medical Services


Preferred Licensure and Certification

  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) - Single State - State Board of Nursing
