Job Description

What You'll Be Doing

Every Wake County EMS response ends with a patient care report, and that report becomes a claim. Billing is where our compliance risk is highest, and we need someone who knows healthcare billing and coding well enough to read a claim the way an auditor would.

This isn't a back-office role. Our compliance program follows the seven elements in federal OIG guidance, and you'll keep it working: independent audits, honest reporting to leadership, and fixes that stick.

What You'll Own:

  • Audit EMS billing and coding from the patient care report to the claim, including whether the care we billed was medically necessary
  • Watch the billing data (denials, high-value codes, outliers), build billing compliance metrics and brief leadership on what they show
  • Hold our billing vendor accountable and report what you find
  • When an audit finds a problem, lead the response: investigate, find the root cause, make sure overpayments are repaid on time, and fix the process
  • Run our annual compliance risk assessment and keep the EMS risk register current, including billing and HIPAA privacy risks
  • Keep policies current, deliver training on documentation, billing, and privacy, and keep reporting channels open for people who speak up
  • Support OSHA compliance, injury prevention and safety incident investigations
  • Step into the Emergency Operations Center or operational safety officer role during major events

Why Wake County EMS:

Integrity, accountability and continuous improvement aren't posters on the wall here, they're how we run the system. You'll work with people who take the mission seriously, and your work will have visible, real-world stakes.
