Job Description

The Employee Relations and Compliance Specialist serves as a strategic partner to Valley Presbyterian Hospital leaders, managing the full spectrum of employee relations functions within a highly regulated California healthcare environment. This role provides expert consultation, leads complex workplace investigations, and supports the design and implementation of HR policies and practices that align with organizational values, California labor laws, and federal regulatory requirements.

The position plays a critical role in fostering a respectful, compliant, and inclusive workplace by resolving employee concerns, ensuring adherence to employment regulations, mitigating organizational risk, and delivering impactful training programs for leaders and employees.

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5+ years of progressive Employee Relations experience, including management of complex and high-risk workplace investigations to include demonstrated expertise in assessing, investigating, and resolving sensitive employee relations issues in a timely and compliant manner.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in training design, development, and facilitation, including compliance-driven programs (e.g., harassment prevention training) including proven ability to analyze data, identify trends, and translate insights into actionable strategies and training programs.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of California employment laws and regulations, including but not limited to FEHA, CFRA, FMLA, AWS, wage and hour laws, harassment prevention mandates, and leave of absence requirements.
  • Strong understanding of federal employment laws (e.g., Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FLSA,) and their intersection with California law.
  • Experience navigating employee relations in a healthcare or similarly regulated environment strongly preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills with the ability to build trust and credibility across all organizational levels.
  • High level of discretion, sound judgment, and commitment to maintaining confidentiality.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business or Public Administration

Licensure Certification:

  • Must successfully complete and maintain LA City Fire Card certification at the time of hire or within the first 30 days of employment
  • SPHR or SHRM-CP certification preferred

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to leaders and employees by providing expert, California-specific guidance on employee relations matters, including performance management, policy interpretation, corrective action, and workplace conflict resolution.
  • Lead and manage complex, sensitive, and high-risk employee relations investigations, including allegations of harassment, discrimination, retaliation, and other workplace concerns, ensuring thorough, impartial, and timely resolution in compliance with California FEHA and other applicable laws.
  • Conduct end-to-end investigations, including intake, witness interviews, evidence review, documentation, and investigative findings; develop clear, defensible recommendations and partner with HR and executive leadership on appropriate corrective actions and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with HR leadership, Legal, and Compliance to respond to external agency claims and audits (e.g., CRD/DFEH, EEOC, NLRB, DOL), ensuring accurate documentation, regulatory compliance, and effective organizational representation.
  • Ensure consistent and equitable application of policies and progressive discipline practices across the organization, including grievance resolution and terminations, while aligning with California employment laws and organizational standards.
  • Interpret and apply federal, California state, and local employment laws (including FEHA, CFRA, FMLA, ADA, wage and hour laws, and leave regulations); proactively recommend updates to policies, procedures, and practices to ensure ongoing compliance and reduce risk.
  • Analyze employee relations data, case trends, turnover metrics, and workplace indicators to identify systemic issues; develop and implement proactive strategies to improve organizational effectiveness and employee experience.
  • Partner with leaders to anticipate and address workplace issues early, providing coaching, guidance, and practical interventions that foster a respectful, complaint, and high-performing work environment.
  • Design, develop, and deliver targeted training programs for leaders and employees, including California-mandated harassment prevention training (SB 1343), performance management, documentation practices, and workplace compliance.
  • Support initiatives that strengthen employee engagement, inclusion, and workplace culture, aligning employee relations strategies with organizational values, retention goals, and workforce needs.
  • Conduct and analyze employee surveys, climate assessments, and pulse checks; partner with leadership to develop and implement actionable plans that enhance engagement and address identified concerns.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on Alternative Work Schedule (AWS) programs, including compliance with California requirements, employee voting processes, and end-to-end administration of elections/revotes.
  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships across all levels of the organization, promoting consistency, trust, and alignment with Valley Presbyterian Hospital’s mission, values, and behavioral expectations.
  • Lead or contribute to special projects, audits, and organizational initiatives as assigned, ensuring alignment with HR strategy and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Salary: $88,545.60 to $114,039.47
