About AECDR
AECDR has been proudly serving the Durham Region community since 1995. We are a 24/7 urgent care and emergency hospital providing care for cats and dogs, including emergencies, walk-ins, and referrals from family practices throughout the area.
Our 8,400 sq. ft. hospital is home to a team of over 30 veterinary professionals, including 6 full-time veterinarians and 11 full-time RVTs. We have doctors on shift around the clock, so you are never working alone.
Our team brings well over 50 years of combined clinical experience, and our DVMs are passionate about supporting and mentoring one another.
Why Join AECDR?
Strong mentorship and support
All of our DVMs are strong mentors, and we have a team culture where questions are encouraged and everyone is willing to help. New graduates are welcome, and part-time ER shifts can be a great way to build confidence and experience while working alongside an experienced veterinarian.
Excellent work-life balance
Our schedule is designed with your life outside the hospital in mind. You’ll typically work 3–4 shifts in a row, followed by 4–7 days off. Schedules are planned 6–12 months in advance, with the flexibility to trade shifts when needed.
Experienced, collaborative team
You’ll work alongside experienced DVMs and RVTs who are committed to providing excellent patient care and supporting each other through the challenges of emergency medicine. Our RVTs are empowered to use their skills and knowledge to their fullest, allowing our doctors to work collaboratively with the technical team.
Advanced medicine and diagnostics
We are committed to continuing to grow our medicine and provide our team with opportunities to learn. We are partnered with MapleTree Veterinary Diagnostics, giving our team and referring veterinarians access to Internal Medicine consultations, including ultrasound and endoscopy.
We also recently added a Bionet ICU oxygen therapy unit, designed to provide oxygen therapy for cats and medium-sized dogs.
A culture where people matter
Emergency medicine can be challenging, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. We work hard, support each other, and know how to have fun on shift. From continuing education and mentorship to mental health support and flexible scheduling, we want our team members to thrive both inside and outside of the hospital.

Being part of VetStrategy is about being part of something bigger – an ever-growing community, where we connect person-to-person and skill-to-need, united by a common purpose of healthy animals, happy owners. From our humble beginning in 2006 to the present day, we continue to make a difference in the lives of people who have dedicated themselves to this industry.
When VetStrategy co-founders Orin Litman and his wife, Dr. Michelle Cutler, decided to acquire McLean Animal Hospital in 2006, they focused on three promises – our Customer Promise of world-class veterinary care, delivered locally; our People Promise, to be a great place to work; and our Sustainability Promise to be a force for good for patients, people and our plant.
Keeping our three promises led VetStrategy to become the leading veterinary network in Canada, with veterinary practices, 24-hour emergency care, and specialty hospitals coast-to-coast. We have developed and refined a model for supporting our practices across the country.
What we do:
We care for those dedicated to caring for animals by creating a workplace where we focus on innovation, engagement, and teamwork.
We know the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into building each practice, and we don’t want to touch that – we truly embrace the uniqueness of each clinic. Our heritage first approach means we won’t change a clinic’s name, culture or heritage.
We understand the challenges our veterinary teams face and are committed to doing what’s right – for them, their clients, and their patients.
We care about the future of veterinary medicine. Everything we do comes back to ensuring that veterinarians have the time, support, and infrastructure to focus on responsible medicine and quality care.
We believe in empowering our support office and clinic staff and providing them opportunities to develop their skills and grow in their careers.
