Job Description

Performs skilled tasks in repairing and maintaining all facility equipment, construction type tracked or wheeled, gasoline or diesel driven equipment within the guidelines of departmental standards and procedures, verbal instructions, and manufacturers’ guidance. Reports to the Fleet Maintenance Manager, Fire, or other designated person, works with other departmental employees and the customer to provide maintenance support.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs tasks in repairing and maintaining construction type tracked or wheeled gasoline or diesel driven equipment. Performs comprehensive preventative maintenance inspections and daily fueling and greasing of equipment. Perform test to include drive train, engine operations, transmissions, suspension, steering, brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, and HVAC. Utilize diagnostic tools, determine corrective measures in a timely fashion.
  • Assists in conducting, testing, and documenting all repair work. Assists in responding to road calls for equipment failures. Complete apparatus and vehicle checks, diagnosis, and repairs of both scheduled and non-scheduled repairs. Complete work orders. Identify items and systems needing repairs. Ensure equipment operation and performance is within specified limits.
  • Operates or uses various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments. Operate and maintain maintenance equipment, maintain mechanic tool set. Repair tires, dismount and inspect tires to find problems, repair, mount, inflate and balance tires. Perform limited welds and part fabrication, weld broken parts. Service shop equipment and cleans shop area. Maintains parts inventory and tracks maintenance costs for all equipment.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE

  • Maintenance/Repair of equipment
  • Welding
  • Documentation of repair work (paper and computer based)
  • Cleaning of shop area

Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D.

Experience: Three (3) years’ experience in automotive, medium vehicle, and heavy vehicle repair and maintenance.

Certification:

  • Must obtain 1 ASE certification in medium and heavy vehicles within 12 months of hire.
  • Must obtain EVT within 12 months of hire.

Licensing:

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.
  • Possess or have ability to obtain a valid Georgia or South Carolina operator/driver’s license for the type vehicle or equipment operated.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Processes limited knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices of servicing and repairing equipment; drivetrains, suspensions and braking systems, heating and air conditioning, electrical, air, hydraulic and other related systems; the use and operation of tools and machinery used in equipment repair work; the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Possesses limited proficiency in diagnosing malfunctions or defects in equipment, adapting available tools and parts to specific repair problems and interpreting technical instructions from manufacturer’s manuals and bulletins or other related data.
  • Ability to properly complete written and computerized repair order documentation.
  • Ability to use common office equipment and basic computer software (word processing, email)
  • Ability to read and write at least at an 8thgrade level.
  • Ability to utilize computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform work independently.
  • Proficiency in first aid, CPR, and AED.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Possess mathematical skills and ability to take accurate measurements.

Other:

  • This position requires a staff call up in emergency situations.
  • Travel from office to other locations is required.
