We're seeking an Emergency Medicine Consultant to join the emergency department of a major tertiary referral hospital in Darwin. This is a rare chance to work in a high-acuity, nationally unique ED while enjoying a relaxed tropical lifestyle.
The patient population is young, with a median age of 32. The region has Australia's highest per capita rates of acute rheumatic fever, TB, and blunt and penetrating trauma. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients account for about 30% of ED presentations and 50% of hospital admissions, giving consultants meaningful work in Indigenous health and close links with remote retrieval services.
Darwin is a vibrant, cosmopolitan tropical city of about 150,000 people, with easy access to the world heritage national parks of Kakadu and Litchfield, as well as Katherine and the Kimberley. It's about 2 hours by plane to Bali for long weekends. Commutes are short, it's warm all year round, and there's a strong community and outdoor lifestyle for both families and individuals.
