The primary task of the instructor at Southern Union State Community College is to instruct students in activities designed to promote intellectual growth. Essential duties and responsibilities of an instructor include commitments to students in the classroom, the teaching discipline, students outside the classroom, to the College, and to the community. The instructor is subject to work at varied locations based on student and operational demand at any or all sites and locations served by the College.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience according to the Alabama Community College System Salary Schedule D1 Salary range: $48,454 - $98,138 for nine-month employment; Summer employment may be available dependent on enrollment: $14,959 - $30,351.

Benefits: Full time employees are entitled to the College’s benefit package to include: PEEHIP, retirement, leave (annual, sick, and personal), etc.

Examples of duties

  • Planning, organizing and instructing coursework.

  • Working with the Dept. Chair or Dean to development, implement and evaluate curriculum.

  • Preparing and maintaining current syllabus for the teaching area.

  • Selecting textbooks or resources and teaching materials in cooperation with colleagues.

  • Using a method of instruction appropriate to the type of learning required.

  • Instructing students using interactive techniques including lecture, demonstration, clinical or lab supervision.

  • Providing academic and career counseling to students and promote student leadership and enrichment experiences.

  • Developing appropriate tests or other tools for student evaluation.

  • Designing and administering evaluations for grade determination each semester.

  • Developing and delivering web-based instruction as needed.

  • Computing student grades and reporting to Admissions office.

  • Maintains appropriate lab and/or clinical hours.

  • May demonstrate skills competencies.

  • May provide supervision to adjunct or lab instructors.

  • May make on-site clinical visits or take a group of students to a clinical site.

  • May devise and administer skills evaluations.

  • May teach day or evening classes.
  • May have to travel to other Southern Union campuses to teach.
  • Performing other professional duties as assigned by the President or Dean of Health Science, and Program Director/Chair.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Unencumbered Alabama paramedic license or be eligible to apply for an Alabama license.
  • (3) years full-time experience as a paramedic.
