Job Description

The University of Chicago’s Department of Medicine, Section of Emergency Medicine, is searching for full-time faculty members at any rank to serve within Region 11 EMS and support the University of Chicago Medicine’s role as an Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Resource Hospital. Since its designation in 1976, UChicago Medicine has provided medical oversight, protocol development, and administrative leadership for the Chicago South EMS System as part of Region 11 EMS. Academic rank and compensation are dependent upon qualifications. These positions are benefits eligible. The Region 11 EMS Medical Directors Consortium (MDC) is comprised of four Resource Hospitals that collaborate to ensure high-quality, coordinated emergency medical services across the city of Chicago. UChicago Medicine is a Level I Adult Trauma Center, Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, STEMI Center, Burn Center, VAD Center, and Level III Perinatal Center.

Appointees will join a highly collaborative academic faculty with active programs in emergency medicine research, medical education, simulation, international emergency medicine, EMS and prehospital medicine, and air-medical transport. These positions offer the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to regional EMS leadership and may evolve into a future Assistant EMS Medical Director role within Region 11 EMS.


Clinical responsibilities will include direct attending coverage within the Emergency Department at the University of Chicago Medical Center Hyde Park campus, with additional responsibilities in resident and trainee education, EMS quality improvement initiatives, protocol development, systems collaboration, and engagement with regional EMS agencies, fire departments, and hospital leadership.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) have a medical doctorate or equivalent, 2) hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Illinois, 3) be board certified or eligible in Emergency Medicine, and 4) complete an accredited EMS fellowship or meet specific practice pathways and pass the EMS subspecialty exam.
